On Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2025, President Donald Trump called CBS News chief White House correspondent Nancy Cordes a “stupid person” during a question-and-answer session at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. Cordes had asked why he blamed the Biden administration for the entry into the United States of the suspect in the Washington, D.C., National Guard shooting. The American Presidency Project transcript records the exchange; CBS News identifies Cordes and supplies additional context.
What happened during the Thanksgiving Q&A?
Trump took questions after delivering Thanksgiving remarks at Mar-a-Lago. The American Presidency Project’s transcript says he spoke at 6:32 p.m.; the Office of Communications released the transcript on November 29, 2025. The exchange arose from the November 26 shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C.
A reporter raised U.S. officials’ account that the suspect had worked closely with the CIA in Afghanistan for years and had been vetted, with the vetting coming up clean. CBS identifies the reporter as Nancy Cordes, CBS News chief White House correspondent, and reports that she referred to a Justice Department inspector general finding on vetting before asking why Trump blamed the Biden administration. CBS later reproduced the central question and answer in its November 30 Face the Nation transcript.
What did Trump say to Nancy Cordes?
The American Presidency Project transcript records Trump responding, “Because they let him in. Are you stupid?” After Cordes began, “Well, no——,” Trump continued: “Are you a stupid person? Because they came into—on a plane along with thousands of other people that shouldn’t be here. And you’re just asking questions because you’re a stupid person.”

What was the question about?
Cordes was challenging Trump’s blame of the Biden administration in connection with the suspect and the Washington shooting. CBS reports that the suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, was an Afghan national admitted under the Biden administration and granted asylum under the Trump administration. That immigration timeline is CBS’s account; the transcript itself does not establish the suspect’s full immigration file or the complete history of his vetting.

- Established by the transcript: The date and Mar-a-Lago setting, the sequence of the exchange, and Trump’s recorded words.
- Identified by CBS: The reporter was Nancy Cordes, and the question concerned Trump’s attribution of responsibility to the Biden administration. CBS also reports the suspect’s name and the administrations under which he was admitted and granted asylum.
- Not established here: The complete vetting record, the suspect’s full immigration file, motive, or later investigative findings. The transcript and contemporaneous CBS coverage do not answer those broader questions.
