Playboi Carti’s 30-track MUSIC is worth the hype if you want rap built around voice, atmosphere and restless production more than conventional storytelling. Released March 14, 2025, his first album in five years extends the abrasive language of Whole Lotta Red while moving among trap, cloud rap, plugg and melodic passages. Its scale and influence are clear; its length and lyric-first appeal are more debatable.
What makes MUSIC feel different?
Carti treats his voice less as a vehicle for explanation than as an instrument. Squeaks, rasp, distortion, register shifts and ad-libs become hooks in their own right, set against production that can feel crowded, volatile and deliberately hard to settle into. Repetition is part of the design: a phrase or vocal texture can matter more than a developed verse.

NPR calls this approach “rap anti-stardom”: Carti’s charisma comes partly from withholding the usual explanations and letting rhythm and atmosphere do the work. The result can feel less like a collection of lyric-led songs than a continuous environment. Pitchfork, meanwhile, hears a blockbuster synthesis of the impulses running from his SoundCloud releases through Die Lit and Whole Lotta Red.
How does it compare with Whole Lotta Red?
| Element | Whole Lotta Red | MUSIC |
|---|---|---|
| Vocal approach | Established a confrontational, highly manipulated vocal style and blurry melodies that became a template for online rap. | Pushes vocal texture, ad-libs and changes in register across a larger set of songs. |
| Sound and range | Associated with the rage-rap language that shaped Carti’s influence. | Carries that language forward while drawing on trap, cloud rap, plugg and melodic passages. |
| Scale and pacing | Not stated in the cited coverage. | Thirty tracks; the abundance gives the album scope but can test the listener’s patience. |
| Writing | Not stated in the cited coverage. | Critics disagree about lyrical substance; the album’s central appeal is performance and sound rather than consistently developed writing. |
Rolling Stone Australia describes Whole Lotta Red as a “foundational text for dozens if not hundreds of extremely online acts.” That influence is a useful measure of continuity: MUSIC does not need to repeat the earlier album exactly to extend its vocabulary. It broadens the palette while keeping vocal mutation and forceful production at the center.

Does the 30-track length sustain its momentum?
The length suits Carti’s maximalist idea: a flood of sounds, vocal modes and production choices can make the record feel like an all-enveloping event. But abundance is also its clearest trade-off. If you want concise structures, sharply developed verses or a lyric that anchors every track, the collection’s repetition and density may blur together. If you respond to changing textures and atmosphere, that same scale gives the album room to move between modes.
Why does Carti matter to Gen Z rap?
His influence is most visible in the sounds and presentation other artists have taken up: manipulated vocals, blurry melodies, rage production, high-impact stage energy and internet-native aesthetics. That is different from claiming that he is a consistently strong conventional songwriter. Critics can question the writing while still recognizing how widely his performance style has traveled.

The scale is supported by commercial markers, not by a single measure of what all young listeners prefer. Live Nation Entertainment reported more than 3 billion worldwide streams and described MUSIC as the ninth-highest rap-album charting debut of all time in 2025. The album also debuted at No. 1 on the US album chart. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution framed Carti as “Atlanta’s Gen-Z rap king,” while NPR argued that his presence has retuned a young fanbase’s ears.

Yes, if you value rap as sound and performance as much as narrative: the album makes Carti’s vocal invention and influence easy to hear. It is a less certain recommendation for listeners who want a tightly edited sequence or substantial writing on every track. MUSIC deepens his position not by resolving those trade-offs, but by making his distinctive strengths the whole point.
