Night Shyamalan’s concert-set psychological thriller, is now available through U.S. streaming listings—but its unusual premise helps explain why it split audiences and critics. The film follows Philadelphia firefighter Cooper Abbott, played by Josh Hartnett, as he takes his daughter Riley to a Lady Raven concert and discovers that the arena has been turned into an FBI operation designed to catch a serial killer known as the Butcher.
The catch, revealed early rather than saved as a final twist, is that Cooper is the killer the authorities are hunting. From there, Trap becomes a peculiar escape thriller staged inside a pop concert: Cooper must evade an increasingly elaborate police operation while maintaining the appearance of a loving father enjoying a night out with his daughter.

What is Trap about?
Cooper Abbott appears to be an ordinary father taking his teenage daughter, Riley, to see the fictional pop star Lady Raven. Riley is thrilled to attend the concert, while Cooper seems slightly out of place among the younger fans and elaborate stage production.
He soon learns that the venue is surrounded by law enforcement. The FBI has received information that the Butcher—a serial killer responsible for a string of murders—is attending the concert. Authorities have designed the event as a massive sting operation, using security checkpoints, surveillance, staff interviews, and controlled exits to prevent the killer from escaping.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCooper realizes that the operation is aimed at him. The rest of the film follows his attempts to navigate the arena, exploit weaknesses in the investigation, and protect his carefully constructed family life without exposing himself.
That setup makes Trap a crime thriller and psychological thriller first. It contains horror and mystery elements, but it is not a conventional supernatural horror movie. Its tension comes from concealment, surveillance, manipulation, and the increasingly difficult task of appearing normal while surrounded by people searching for you.
Why critics and audiences disagreed
The split reception is measurable rather than merely anecdotal. Metacritic lists the film at 52 out of 100 from 46 critic reviews, categorized as “Mixed or Average.” Its user rating is listed at 5.1 out of 10 from 347 ratings, also in the mixed-or-average range.
Rotten Tomatoes’ collected reviews show a similar divide. Some critics responded positively to the film’s commitment to its unusual idea, its strange sense of humor, and Josh Hartnett’s performance. Others objected to the implausibility of the FBI operation, the uneven suspense, and the amount of time devoted to concert performances and Lady Raven’s music.

The disagreement largely comes down to how viewers interpret the movie’s heightened style:
| What supporters see | What detractors see |
|---|---|
| A deliberately eccentric, campy thriller | A thriller whose logic is too implausible to sustain tension |
| A bold decision to make the concert central to the story | Too much performance footage interrupting the plot |
| A committed, entertaining Josh Hartnett performance | An exaggerated performance that makes Cooper difficult to believe |
| A playful high-concept premise | A promising premise weakened by tonal shifts |
In other words, the same qualities can produce opposite reactions. If you accept that Trap operates like an absurdist thriller with camp elements, its improbable police operation and theatrical behavior can be part of the entertainment. If you expect a tightly realistic procedural, those choices may make the movie feel incoherent.
Josh Hartnett’s performance is the film’s main attraction
Josh Hartnett plays Cooper as a man constantly switching between identities. In public, he is attentive, patient, and proud of his daughter. In private, he is calculating, observant, and increasingly desperate. The performance depends on the contrast between his warm fatherly presentation and the controlled menace underneath it.
That contrast also explains some of the critical disagreement. Supportive viewers have praised Hartnett for embracing the movie’s heightened tone rather than trying to make every moment naturalistic. Viewers less receptive to the film’s campier elements may find Cooper’s behavior too conspicuous, particularly when he is supposed to be avoiding suspicion.
The rest of the principal cast includes Ariel Donoghue as Riley, Saleka Shyamalan as Lady Raven, Alison Pill as Cooper’s wife Rachel Abbott, and Hayley Mills as Dr. Josephine Grant. Riley is important to the film’s emotional structure: Cooper’s relationship with his daughter is not just the reason he attends the concert, but also the pressure point that complicates every escape attempt.
The concert is part of the narrative—not just decoration
The Lady Raven concert occupies an unusual amount of Trap. The arena, stage, backstage areas, merchandise zones, security corridors, and crowd movement all become part of the thriller’s geography. Cooper uses the event’s noise and complexity as cover, while the FBI uses the same environment to limit his options.

That music-forward structure is one of the film’s most distinctive choices. It is also one of the clearest reasons for the divided reaction. Viewers expecting a straightforward serial-killer chase may see the songs as interruptions. Viewers willing to treat the concert as an extended cinematic set piece may appreciate the way performances, lighting, crowd behavior, and backstage access shape the suspense.
Saleka Shyamalan, M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter, plays Lady Raven and supplied the original music for the fictional star. The 2024 album LADY RAVEN (Original Music From The Motion Picture TRAP) contains 14 songs and runs approximately 44 minutes. Fans interested in the musical side of the film can also look for the Lady Raven soundtrack vinyl, although edition availability and stock should be checked before purchase.

It is worth distinguishing the character from the performer: Lady Raven is the fictional pop star in the story, while Saleka is the real-world recording artist and actor who portrays her.
Is Trap based on a true story?
No. Trap is not presented as a film based on a true story. Shyamalan has said that the premise drew partial inspiration from Operation Flagship, a real law-enforcement sting in which wanted fugitives were lured to a fake event, but Trap is a fictional thriller rather than a dramatization of that operation.
That distinction matters because the film’s central idea can sound like a real crime headline: authorities use a major public event to draw in a wanted killer. The specific characters, concert, investigation, and family situation belong to the movie.
Release, rating, and box-office context
Trap opened theatrically in the United States on August 2, 2024. It has a listed runtime of 105 minutes and a PG-13 rating for violent content and brief strong language.
The film reportedly cost approximately $30 million to produce. The Numbers lists roughly $42.8 million in domestic theatrical grosses, $40.9 million internationally, and $83.7 million worldwide. Those figures make Trap a modest commercial performer, but they do not by themselves establish whether the film was profitable or unprofitable; marketing, distribution, and other costs are not captured by a simple comparison between budget and box office.

Who should watch Trap?
Trap is best suited to viewers who enjoy high-concept thrillers, stylized suspense, and movies that are willing to become strange rather than remain strictly realistic. It is particularly appealing if you like:
- serial-killer stories built around concealment and escape;
- single-location or limited-location thrillers;
- movies with deliberately heightened, almost theatrical performances;
- concert films that use music and crowd movement as plot mechanics; and
- M. Night Shyamalan’s more playful and divisive work.
It may be a poor match if you need police procedures to behave realistically, prefer an even tone, or want the concert material to remain in the background. The premise is strong enough to attract viewers who would not normally watch a concert-centered thriller, but the execution asks the audience to accept a substantial amount of heightened logic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A spoiler-light verdict
Trap is neither a universally acclaimed comeback nor a critical disaster. It is a knowingly unusual thriller whose best features and biggest weaknesses come from the same source: Shyamalan commits to the idea of a serial-killer escape unfolding inside a pop concert.

It also creates abrupt tonal shifts, improbable behavior, and a rhythm that will not work for everyone. Josh Hartnett’s performance and the concert setting provide the strongest reasons to watch, while the film’s plausibility and police-procedural logic are the main barriers for skeptical viewers.
The fairest expectation is not “a realistic FBI manhunt,” but “a heightened, occasionally campy thriller built around a very strange night at a concert.” With that expectation, Trap has a better chance of delivering what it is trying to do.
