“Trending” can mean several different things on TikTok:

Use hashtags for relevance, not volume alone
A practical mix is one or two hashtags that describe the subject, one audience or community tag, and an event, language, or location tag only when genuinely applicable. Using unrelated tags such as #pizza or #Feid simply because their totals are large can misclassify a post and attract the wrong viewers.

TikTok’s seasonal list was different
On the same date, TikTok published its first U.S. Songs of the Summer 2023 list. It named “Makeba” by Jain the No. 1 U.S. song of the summer. TikTok separately named “If We Ever Broke Up” by Mae Stephens the global leader. Those results were based on video creations over the summer, not the daily U.S. snapshot in the Tech Times article.

TikTok’s announcement also highlighted Doechii’s “What It Is” and Myke Towers’s “LALA,” and said #SongOfTheSummer had reached 5 billion views. Later year-end context again identified “If We Ever Broke Up” globally, while U.K. reporting named “Sprinter” by Dave and Central Cee for that market. These geographic and time-frame differences are why the lists should not be merged.

How to use a trending sound without making a generic post
- Check availability: Open the sound page in TikTok and confirm it is available in your country and for your account.
- Check momentum: Look at recent uploads and engagement instead of relying only on lifetime usage.
- Find the hook: Select the most recognizable lyric, beat, or transition point.
- Match the idea: Make the audio serve a clear subject, product, story, or joke rather than forcing an unrelated trend.
- Show the payoff early: Put the visual hook or promise in the opening seconds.
- Add readable text: On-screen captions help viewers who watch without sound.
- Keep tags focused: Use only hashtags that describe the video and its intended audience.
- Publish while relevant: A genuinely fast-moving trend can lose momentum quickly.
- Review performance: Compare watch time, completion rate, saves, shares, and comments, then test a different angle if viewers drop early.
A popular sound can provide context for discovery, but it does not guarantee views, followers, or virality. High popularity also means high competition, and a generic post can disappear among thousands of similar uploads.
Music rights for creators, brands, and advertisers
Music visible in TikTok’s ordinary library is not automatically cleared for every commercial use. Personal organic posting, branded content, and paid advertising can have different permissions. Businesses should check the license for the specific account and placement and use TikTok’s Commercial Music Library when they need audio cleared for TikTok ads. Do not assume that a song is safe for an advertisement merely because it is available to a personal user.
How to check TikTok trends now
The August 2023 list cannot be reused as a current ranking. TikTok’s Creative Center is the appropriate starting point for present-day checks:

- Set the country or region that matches your audience.
- Apply an available time-period or industry filter.
- Open the item’s analytics and inspect trendlines, related videos, audience information, regional popularity, and related hashtags.
- Compare recent growth with total historical popularity.
- Confirm that the audio is permitted for your account type and intended use.
