The message means Netflix cannot associate the TV or streaming device with the account’s designated household. It does not necessarily mean the television is broken. Netflix determines a household mainly from the account’s usual internet connection, IP address, device information, and account activity—not GPS.
The correct fix depends on where the TV is: at the account owner’s home, temporarily somewhere else, or being used permanently by someone outside the household.
First, identify which situation applies
| Where is the TV? | Use this solution |
|---|---|
| At the account owner’s main home | Connect it to the normal home internet and update the Netflix Household. |
| At a hotel, friend’s home, or other temporary location | Choose I’m Traveling or Watch Temporarily and request a temporary code. |
| Used permanently by someone at another address | Use a separate Netflix account or an eligible extra-member arrangement. |
| An old TV that no longer supports Netflix | Use a supported external streaming player, if the TV has a compatible input. |
Netflix may show slightly different wording, including “Your TV isn’t part of the Netflix Household,” “Your device isn’t part of the Netflix Household,” or “This device isn’t part of your Netflix Household.” These messages generally indicate the same household-association problem.
If the TV is at home
- Connect the TV to the household’s usual internet connection. If the home has multiple networks, avoid a guest network or a separate hotspot. The TV should be using the same main connection normally used by the Netflix account.
- Open the Netflix error screen and choose Update Netflix Household. Depending on the TV, the option may also be available through Netflix’s Get Help or Settings menu.
- Follow the verification prompts. Netflix may ask the account owner to confirm the household by email, text message, QR code, or another on-screen method.
- Restart Netflix after verification. Close and reopen the app. On a computer, refresh the browser after the household has been updated.
For a phone, tablet, or computer that is being used at home, connect the device to the same Wi-Fi network as a TV or TV streaming device already associated with the household. If Netflix still cannot associate it, update the household from the TV and then restart the app or refresh the browser.

QR-code or device-confirmation options
Some televisions and TV streaming devices display options such as Troubleshoot This TV, Confirm Device, or a QR-code verification screen.
- For a QR-code process, use a phone or tablet with a camera and follow the instructions shown after scanning.
- For home verification, Netflix may require the phone or tablet to be connected to the home Wi-Fi.
- For Confirm Device, the account owner may receive an email or text asking them to approve the TV or streaming device.
- After successful verification, select Start Watching if that option appears.
If QR verification fails, check that the phone and TV are connected to the same internet connection. If the phone cannot connect to the home internet, Netflix’s instructions allow the account owner to use another TV already associated with the household to complete verification.
If the TV is temporarily away from home
Do not update the Netflix Household to a hotel, friend’s house, or other temporary location unless the account owner genuinely intends to move the household’s main location. Netflix provides a separate travel option for short-term use.
- On the blocked TV or streaming device, choose I’m Traveling or Watch Temporarily.
- Ask the Netflix account owner to check the account email or phone.
- Enter the one-time access code or open the temporary-access link Netflix provides.
- Start watching before the code expires.
Netflix’s current help guidance says the four-digit temporary code expires after 15 minutes. The travel option may also disappear after the device reaches Netflix’s limit for temporary access-code requests.

For people who travel regularly, Netflix advises opening the app while connected to the household Wi-Fi at least once a month. This may reduce interruptions when the device is later used away from home, but it does not turn a travel device into a second permanent household.
Check for an old hotel, friend’s TV, or unfamiliar session
A TV can remain signed in after it was used at a hotel, vacation rental, friend’s home, or another location. That stale session can contribute to confusion about which devices are associated with the account.
- Open Netflix’s account area and go to Manage Access and Devices.
- Review the recently active devices and their approximate locations or activity details.
- Sign out of any device you do not recognize or no longer use.
- If necessary, choose Sign Out of All Devices.
- Return to the TV at home and use Update Netflix Household.
Do not assume this list contains every device that has ever used the account. Netflix says the device list can take up to 48 hours to update, may omit some devices, and may not show devices that have been inactive for more than 90 days. Devices used only for Netflix games or Tudum may also be excluded.
If the account owner sees a sign-in they do not recognize, change the Netflix password and sign out of all devices. Be cautious with messages claiming to be Netflix: Netflix warns that it will not ask for passwords, payment information, or personal information by text or email. Open the official Netflix app or type the official website address yourself instead of using a suspicious message link.

If someone outside the household is using the account
Netflix’s household policy is not intended to support one account being shared permanently among unrelated homes. Changing the household to accommodate a second address can also disrupt access for the people using the account at the real main location.
The compliant options are:
- Create a separate Netflix account. This is the straightforward choice for someone who lives at another address.
- Add an extra member, if eligible. Netflix says extra-member availability depends on the country, plan, and billing arrangement. In many countries, Standard and Premium plans may support extra members, but the exact rules vary.
An extra member must activate in the same country where the account owner created the extra-member slot, and Netflix does not allow extra members on ad-supported plans according to its current account-sharing guidance. Check the account’s own options because eligibility and plan features can change by country.
When the problem is the TV—not the household
Netflix supports many smart TVs, streaming players, game consoles, cable boxes, phones, tablets, and computers. However, some TVs and TV streaming devices made before 2015 may no longer support Netflix. The app can also disappear when a manufacturer stops providing the software update Netflix requires.
Check whether the TV has a pending software or firmware update. If the manufacturer confirms that Netflix is no longer available on the model, the practical solution is a different supported device connected to the TV.

A supported Fire TV Stick or another Netflix-compatible external streaming player can be useful for an older television that has an available HDMI input. Netflix lists device families such as Amazon Fire TV/Stick, Roku, and Chromecast among supported options, while Amazon documents Netflix availability on Fire TV devices. Verify the specific model and availability in your country before buying.
Important: an external player does not bypass Netflix Household rules. It is only a replacement playback device. After connecting it, you still need to sign in and associate or verify it under the account’s household policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do first
- Do not repeatedly reinstall Netflix. Clearing app data, uninstalling, or resetting the app signs you out and can remove downloaded titles. Those steps may help with a separate app-state problem, but they do not replace household verification.
- Do not rely on a VPN. Netflix’s official household process is based on account, network, and device association; the reviewed guidance does not establish a VPN as a reliable fix.
- Do not factory-reset the TV as the first response. A reset can erase settings without resolving the account’s household status.
- Do not reset the router repeatedly unless there is a separate internet problem. A normal connection with a household-association error usually requires verification, not more networking resets.
- Do not change the household to a temporary travel location. Use I’m Traveling or Watch Temporarily instead.
- Do not enter Netflix credentials or payment details into a text-message or email link. Use the official app or website.
A quick decision checklist
- Is the TV at the account owner’s main home? If yes, connect it to the normal home internet and select Update Netflix Household.
- Is it temporarily away? Select I’m Traveling or Watch Temporarily and use the account owner’s one-time code.
- Is a QR code or Confirm Device option available? Complete it with the account owner’s approved phone, tablet, email, or text.
- Was the TV previously used somewhere else? Review Manage Access and Devices, sign out stale or unfamiliar sessions, and update the household from home.
- Is the user permanently outside the household? Use a separate account or an eligible extra-member slot.
- Is Netflix unavailable because the TV is obsolete? Use a supported external streaming player—but remember that it remains subject to household verification.

Device menus, plan eligibility, supported models, and travel limits can vary by country, account, and software version.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this message mean my TV is broken?
Usually, no. It generally means Netflix could not associate the TV or streaming device with the account’s household. If the TV is at home, connect it to the normal household internet and choose Update Netflix Household. A separate device problem is more likely if the TV no longer supports Netflix or the app is unavailable.
Can I fix the error by changing the Netflix Household to my hotel or friend’s Wi-Fi?
Not if the location is temporary. Use I’m Traveling or Watch Temporarily and request the one-time code instead. Update Netflix Household only when the account’s genuine main location has changed.

How long does the Netflix temporary travel code last?
Netflix’s current help guidance says the four-digit temporary code expires after 15 minutes. The travel option may also become unavailable after the device reaches Netflix’s limit for temporary-code requests.
Will a Fire TV Stick bypass the Netflix Household restriction?
No. A Fire TV Stick can replace an old or unsupported TV app, but the new device still must be signed in and associated or verified under Netflix’s household rules.
Why is a device missing from Manage Access and Devices?
Netflix says the list can take up to 48 hours to update, does not include every possible signed-in device, and may omit devices inactive for more than 90 days or devices used only for Netflix games or Tudum.

The Bottom Line
At home: connect the TV to the household Wi-Fi and choose Update Netflix Household. Away temporarily: choose I’m Traveling or Watch Temporarily. Outside the household permanently: use a separate account or an eligible extra-member option. If the TV is simply too old to support Netflix, use a supported external player—but no hardware bypasses the household policy.
