Spoilers for all of The Witcher Season 4. The season ends with Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri still separated and each in danger. Geralt is knighted but remains focused on finding his family; Yennefer goes after Vilgefortz and is swept into a sea whirlpool; and Ciri, now calling herself Falka, is captured by Leo Bonhart after he kills the Rats. None of those cliffhangers is resolved in Season 4. Netflix has confirmed that Season 5 will be the series’ final season, but has not revealed how it will resolve them.
What happens at the end of The Witcher Season 4?
The finale leaves the three central characters on separate paths. Geralt’s victory at the Battle of the Bridge brings him an honor he once dreamed of, while Yennefer’s route to the real Ciri ends in a perilous plunge. Ciri’s attempt to return to the Rats gives Bonhart the chance to capture her.

- Geralt is knighted by Queen Meve after helping defend the bridge against Nilfgaardian forces.
- Yennefer learns that the Ciri in Nilfgaard is Teryn, a novice mage transformed into a decoy. She pursues Vilgefortz through a portal and is pulled into a whirlpool.
- Ciri, using the name Falka, is captured by Bonhart. He kills the Rats, including Mistle, while Ciri watches, then spares Ciri.
The ending establishes these events, but not their outcomes: it does not confirm whether Yennefer survives, what Bonhart will do with Ciri, or whether Geralt can continue his search without being drawn into service to Meve.
Why does Queen Meve knight Geralt?
Geralt helps defend the bridge during the battle against Nilfgaard, and Meve makes him a knight. A flashback establishes that becoming a knight was a childhood dream. But the honor arrives after his priorities have changed. As showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich put it, “his dreams are now about Yen and Ciri and finding his family.”

The title may carry an obligation to the crown, which could complicate his search, but Season 4 does not confirm that Meve will require him to serve. The tension is between the status Geralt once wanted and the family he now wants to find.
Why is Yennefer in the sea, and what happened to the real Ciri?
The mages’ struggle to regain control of their portal network changes what Yennefer can do. At Montecalvo, Fringilla works as a double agent while Istredd uses a powerful spell from the Book of Monoliths to destroy Vilgefortz’s portal room. The effort costs Istredd his life force, but the portal network is restored.

Yennefer uses the restored routes to reach Nilfgaard, where she discovers that the apparent Ciri is Teryn, a novice mage Vilgefortz has transformed into a decoy. Yennefer returns to Montecalvo, where former enemies begin organizing to protect magic and plan a Lodge of Sorceresses. But she puts the search for Ciri ahead of that new political project.
With Triss’s help, Yennefer enters a portal to pursue the weakened Vilgefortz. She emerges in a stormy sea, and a whirlpool pulls her under. The season ends without showing whether she escapes or survives.

Why does Bonhart kill the Rats but spare Ciri?
Emhyr wants Ciri for reasons tied to prophecy and his claim to the Continent, and he has Stefan Skellen hire Bonhart to capture her. Bonhart lures Ciri back by trapping the Rats. He then kills them, including Mistle, as Ciri is forced to watch.
He spares Ciri because he sees a fighter in her and wants to test her. That interest is not evidence of a protective or benevolent plan: Ciri is still in the hands of a dangerous captor. Her chosen name, Falka, reflects a darker side she is beginning to accept as she copes with trauma.
What does Nimue’s future-era story mean?
Season 4’s frame story takes place 100 years later. Stribog tells children the Witcher’s story, while Nimue corrects him and recognizes her connection to Ciri’s saga. As an adult, she prepares to study at Aretuza.
Stribog tells her, “How this saga ends may depend on you.” Netflix presents the exchange as a hint that Nimue may matter to the story’s conclusion. Season 4 does not explain how she might affect events, so her role remains an open question rather than a confirmed plot outcome.

How does the ending set up The Witcher’s final season?
The finale creates several unresolved threads rather than bringing the family together: Geralt is searching for Ciri and may face a crown obligation; Yennefer is missing after pursuing Vilgefortz; and Ciri is Bonhart’s captive. Meanwhile, the restored portals and the planned Lodge change the political landscape, while Vilgefortz and Emhyr remain threats. Nimue’s frame story raises a further question about who will shape or preserve the saga.
Netflix announced on April 18, 2024, that Season 5 would be the final season. The company said Seasons 4 and 5 adapt the remaining novels Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and The Lady of the Lake. That establishes the broad scope of the adaptation, not the fate of the characters or a specific resolution for Season 4’s cliffhangers.
