Studio Ghibli Denied Issuing a Fake AI-Art Warning Letter

Studio Ghibli denied issuing a purported legal warning letter circulated amid the 2025 wave of AI-generated images. The denial was not a ruling on AI copyright questions.

No. Studio Ghibli told NHK it had not issued the warning letter that circulated in connection with an AI-image app. The denial addressed that specific letter—not whether AI training or any particular generated image infringes copyright, and not a general studio policy on generative AI.

What the viral post claimed—and what Ghibli said

In late March 2025, people were sharing AI-generated images resembling Studio Ghibli’s animation style, including transformed photographs and familiar memes. Amid that wave, a post associated with an image app called Gib claimed that Ghibli had stopped the app and showed what it presented as a legal warning letter.

NHK reported the studio’s direct response: “We have not issued a warning letter.” ITmedia described the circulated image as likely fake. The reporting establishes that Ghibli did not issue that letter; it does not establish that the studio took legal action against the app or its maker. (NHK; ITmedia)

Why the real 2024 notice is a separate matter

Ghibli did issue a notice on December 9, 2024, about shops selling framed images and paintings clipped from its films, books, and other publications. The studio called those products unauthorized and said it intended to pursue civil or criminal action as applicable. That genuine notice concerned reproductions sold by shops; it predates and is unrelated to the later, purported AI-app warning. (Studio Ghibli notice, December 9, 2024)

What Ghibli did—and did not—say about the image trend

When the trend drew wider attention after ChatGPT’s image-generation release, the Associated Press reported on March 27, 2025, that Ghibli declined to comment on the viral images. AP also described OpenAI’s then-stated position: the company said it refused requests to imitate the style of living artists while allowing requests for broader studio styles. That was OpenAI’s account of its own policy, not a statement by Ghibli. (Associated Press, March 27, 2025)

A later interview account should also be kept distinct from an official studio announcement. Infobae reported on September 7, 2026, that producer and president Toshio Suzuki told The Asahi Shimbun he had declined interview requests because he expected public interest in the trend to fade. Infobae also said Suzuki observed that people with some animation knowledge could tell traditionally made animation from AI imagery. These are remarks attributed to Suzuki in an interview, not a formal company policy statement. (Infobae, September 7, 2026)

What the letter’s falsity means for copyright questions

The fake letter is not evidence that a particular AI model infringed Ghibli’s rights—or that its training or outputs were lawful. Those are separate, fact-dependent questions. The European Commission’s IP Helpdesk explains that copyright generally protects works rather than a style in the abstract, while copying or adapting protected works can require authorization. It identifies unresolved questions involving training datasets, generated images as possible derivative works, and licensing or compensation. Its discussion is general context, not a legal ruling about Ghibli or a specific tool. (European Commission IP Helpdesk, April 15, 2025)

AP quoted attorney Josh Weigensberg, a partner at Pryor Cashman, cautioning that a style-based argument may not end the analysis if an output reproduces identifiable elements of a particular film: “Just stopping at, ‘Oh, well, style isn’t protectable under copyright law.’ That’s not necessarily the end of the inquiry.” That is legal commentary, not a court ruling. Whether a particular image raises a copyright issue depends on the image and the facts behind its creation.

How Miyazaki’s 2016 remark fits the story

AP also recalled a 2016 documentary in which Hayao Miyazaki reacted to a specific experimental animation demonstration, saying, “I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.” The remark predates the 2025 image trend and was about that demonstration; it should not be presented as a response to the viral Ghibli-style images or the alleged legal letter.
