The dead man is revealed to be an impostor
The episode confirms Lamb’s suspicion: David did not kill River. The visitor was an impostor, and the concealed face is crucial to how the deception works. The premiere does not give the audience a clear facial reveal that would justify a more specific claim about how the two men looked alike; its key point is that the body David shot was not River.

River is in France, pursuing the threat
The final scene finds River traveling by taxi through the French countryside with a false passport. He is pursuing whoever is after his family. It answers the premiere’s immediate question about his fate, but it is a forward hook rather than a resolution of the season’s larger story.

What the ending establishes—and what it leaves open
River is alive, David shot an impostor, and Lamb sees through the apparent death before the episode ends. River’s presence in France and his pursuit of the threat to his family point toward the next stage of the story, but the premiere does not identify the full danger or settle the wider plot. The bombing investigation remains a separate, active thread: MI5 has a suspect name, Robert Winters, and a booby-trapped flat, but the second explosion makes clear that the case is still unfolding.
