The sequel appears to have stalled amid creative, scheduling and studio uncertainty—not because of one confirmed decision by Angelina Jolie, director Phillip Noyce or Sony. The available reporting does not provide a definitive public explanation for why the project ended.
How Salt 2 moved from an idea to active development
2010: Sony waited to see how the first film performed
Salt began as a spy thriller written for a male lead. After Tom Cruise left the project, Sony executive Amy Pascal suggested Angelina Jolie, and screenwriter Kurt Wimmer reworked the part for her, according to the Los Angeles Times.

In August 2010, the newspaper reported that Wimmer had ideas for a sequel and that Noyce was interested, though he had other projects. Jolie had expressed interest but had not committed. Sony was waiting to assess the film’s performance in international territories before deciding whether to proceed, the Los Angeles Times reported.
2011: Sony reportedly pursued a sequel, but Noyce stepped away
In June 2011, The Guardian reported that Sony was putting Salt 2 together, with Wimmer expected to write. That was evidence of development activity, not confirmation that the film had been greenlit or would be made.

- Angelina Jolie stars as an accused CIA agent on the run in this action-packed spy thriller that'll keep you guessing until the end!
Noyce had declined to direct. He said a sequel would be better handled by someone with a fresh perspective: “Those three Blu-ray cuts represent just about everything I have to offer on Evelyn Salt … If there ever is a sequel, better it’s directed by someone with a completely fresh take on what I believe could be a totally entertaining and complex series of stories.”
2012: A different writer was reported
A later account of the film’s history reports that Sony hired Becky Johnston for a sequel screenplay in 2012, after Wimmer’s involvement. The change suggests the project continued to be worked on, but does not explain why it failed to advance. The account and its cited bibliography appear on the Salt film-history page.

Why did the sequel stall?
The documented developments point to several unresolved pieces rather than a single established cause:
- Sony was assessing the business case. In 2010, the studio was reportedly waiting to see how the first film performed internationally before deciding about a sequel.
- The director changed course. Noyce declined to direct and said a future installment should bring a fresh perspective.
- Jolie’s return was conditional, according to reporting. The Guardian described her as open to returning if a suitable scenario emerged. That is not the same as a categorical rejection.
- The screenplay assignment shifted. Wimmer was associated with the early sequel plans; Johnston was later reported to have been hired. The available account does not establish that one script was the sole obstacle.
Put together, those events support a cautious explanation: Salt 2 remained uncertain creatively and commercially as its development changed over time. They do not show that any one participant or factor definitively killed it.
Did Salt’s box office performance kill Salt 2?
Not on the evidence available. A 2010 Los Angeles Times report cited $96 million in U.S. earnings and a $110 million production cost. It also noted that marketing costs still had to be accounted for and that a sequel would likely cost more. Those dated figures are not a final profit calculation, and they do not prove Sony abandoned the sequel because the original lost money.

The sources cited here do not establish a formal cancellation announcement or provide a current, definitive statement from Sony or Jolie about why the sequel never happened. A later retrospective characterized the project as having died for lack of traction and financial success, but that is a secondary explanation, not a confirmed statement from the studio. The clearest supported status is that Salt 2 was developed and discussed, then never reached production.
