“Denials” earns its skin-crawling reputation less through the party that precedes it than through the morning after: characters reach for explanations, omissions and social performances to make the previous night bearable. The episode’s most provocative thread is genuinely unsettling, but its strongest idea is broader than shock. Mike White turns denial into a way of watching people try to control what their actions mean.
“Denials” is about the morning after
Written and directed by series creator Mike White, the March 23, 2025 episode opens in the wake of the Full Moon Party. Rather than simply extending the night’s chaos, it follows the characters as they try to interpret, conceal or manage its consequences. The official synopsis puts two of those efforts side by side: Laurie feels deceived by Jaclyn, while Saxon tries to bury what happened the night before. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing captures the setup, but the episode’s structure makes the parallel more pointed: denial can be intimate and bodily, or polished enough to pass as friendship.
Saxon’s shame makes the taboo material difficult to shake
Spoilers: Saxon tries to make sense of his encounter with his brother Lochlan after the party. The episode gives viewers fractured recollections and Saxon’s shifting attempts to explain or suppress what occurred. That uncertainty matters. It would be too simple to turn his account into a definitive diagnosis of his state of mind, or to claim more certainty about the encounter than the episode supplies.
The discomfort comes from the collision of taboo, intoxication, shame and the characters’ attempts to narrate the night afterward. Saxon’s response does not resolve what viewers should think; it shows how quickly he reaches for a version of events that might protect his self-image. The scene is provocative, but it has a dramatic function: it makes the season’s brothers and their power dynamics harder to read as merely comic or comfortably familiar.

That does not make every viewer’s objection disappear. Provocation can expose character, but it can also overwhelm it. Here, the episode’s aftermath focus gives the material more weight than a shock beat alone would have: the question is not only what happened, but who gets to describe it, and what Saxon needs to believe about himself.
The editing keeps memory and performance in tension
The form supports that unease. In a But Why Tho? review, Ridge Harripersad praises the episode’s editing, camera choices and cast’s physical cues as ways of making the characters feel uncertain and revealing. That reading fits the episode’s effect: recollection is not presented as a clean, neutral record, and a pause or a guarded look can complicate what a character says aloud.

The result is an uneasy gap between the image a character presents and the cues that suggest something less settled underneath. Rather than using ambiguity as a puzzle with one hidden answer, “Denials” makes it part of the drama. The viewer has to notice how characters frame themselves, while resisting the temptation to treat every glance as proof of a single interpretation.
Laurie, Jaclyn and Kate turn friendship into another aftermath
The episode’s social fallout offers a sharp counterpoint to Saxon’s private crisis. Laurie confronts Jaclyn over feeling deceived, with Kate caught up in what has been disclosed. Their conflict is not a lighter subplot so much as a different kind of reckoning: the group’s shared history and carefully maintained social ease become liabilities once someone says what she thinks has been hidden.

That shift gives the episode some of its clearest human texture. The women’s confrontation is legible as a friendship rupture, yet it remains entangled with performance: what each woman knew, what she chose to say, and how she wants to be seen. The contrast with Saxon’s thread is effective. Both expose the work people do to control a story, but Laurie’s dispute gives that impulse a recognizably social, often cutting comedy.
Piper’s monastery visit supplies a theme, not an answer
Piper meets Luang Por Teera at the monastery, where the conversation offers the episode’s most direct language about pain and evasion. As quoted in Harper’s Bazaar’s recap, the monk says: “Everyone runs from pain towards the pleasure, but when they get there, only to find more pain. You cannot outrun pain.”

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The line resonates with the episode’s attempts to escape consequences, but it should not be mistaken for a simple key to every character or a definitive statement of the show’s beliefs. Piper’s visit introduces a spiritual lens; the drama remains interested in how particular people respond to discomfort, and in the distance between a lesson heard and a life changed.

Critical responses were divided in tone, not reducible to a single verdict. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page displayed a 75% Tomatometer from eight reviews in its snapshot accessed October 4, 2026; that is a changing critic-aggregation figure, not an audience poll or a permanent consensus. Its excerpts include Vicky Jessop’s concern that the episode may have “gone too far,” while Chris Bennion describes an oppressive, unsettling installment. Harripersad rated it 8/10, emphasizing craft, and Harper’s Bazaar framed it as a particularly provocative morning-after episode.

My verdict is that the episode mostly earns its extremity. The taboo material is meant to disturb, and the fractured recollections keep it from becoming a neat revelation. The risk is that some viewers will find the shock more forceful than the character insight it enables. But “Denials” does not leave the provocation isolated: the friendship confrontation and Piper’s conversation extend its concern with the stories people use to avoid pain. Its most unnerving move is to make denial feel less like a lie someone tells once than a performance that has to be maintained.
