The Terminal List: Dark Wolf is worth watching if you want more of the franchise’s military action and a closer look at Ben Edwards. Its tactical set pieces have force, but the prequel’s espionage plot is less direct than the original series’ revenge story, and Taylor Kitsch’s restrained performance may keep some viewers at arm’s length.
What is The Terminal List: Dark Wolf about?
The seven-episode Prime Video prequel follows Ben Edwards, played by Taylor Kitsch, roughly five years before The Terminal List. Edwards is a Navy SEAL deployed to Iraq and assigned to train local soldiers. As he questions decisions made above him and remains loyal to his teammates, his path leads toward the clandestine world of CIA Special Operations. The setup gives the franchise room to examine how Edwards became the operator viewers know, rather than centering another revenge mission.
Chris Pratt returns as James Reece, with Tom Hopper and Luke Hemsworth among the cast. Jack Carr, the former SEAL whose novels underpin the wider franchise, is a creator and executive producer; David DiGilio is also a creator and showrunner associated with the television franchise. The series premiered Aug. 27, 2025: its first three episodes arrived together, followed by weekly Wednesday releases through the Sept. 24 finale, according to The Associated Press and TV Guide.
Does the action deliver?
Action is the clearest reason to press play. TV Guide critic Liam Mathews singled out the “Hard-hitting action” and “A sense of authenticity,” noting the involvement of military veterans as writers, actors, on-set advisers, and executive producers. The set pieces give the military-espionage premise a grounded, physical texture rather than treating combat as interchangeable spectacle.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That veteran involvement is useful context, not proof that every operational detail is accurate. Kitsch told the AP, “I take the utmost pride to be authentic and rooted in Ben, but there’s a dark side to service.” That emphasis on service’s costs fits the origin-story ambition: the show wants to make Edwards’s choices matter, not just stage his transformation into a more secretive operative.
Is the story as focused as The Terminal List?
Not consistently. The original series’ revenge premise gave it a simple, forceful engine: Reece had a clear target and a personal reason to pursue it. Dark Wolf trades that clarity for an espionage conspiracy and a gradual change in Edwards’s loyalties. The shift offers more space for institutional mistrust and moral compromise, but it can also make the plot feel less cohesive. Mathews’s TV Guide review describes the story as disjointed and argues that it lacks the original’s revenge-fueled purpose.

That is a meaningful trade-off, not an automatic failure. A prequel about a character’s passage into covert work needs room for uncertainty; the problem is that uncertainty does not always build into momentum. If the main appeal for you is a tightly plotted mission with a sharply defined objective, this season is less dependable on that front than its predecessor.
Does Taylor Kitsch make Ben Edwards compelling?
Kitsch plays Edwards as guarded and controlled, a fit for a character navigating military hierarchy and covert operations. That reserve can suggest a man learning to compartmentalize, but it also limits emotional access. Mathews found Kitsch’s performance emotionally inaccessible, a criticism that matters because the series is meant to be a character origin story as much as an action vehicle.

The result is a divided balance: Edwards’s circumstances and the action communicate the pressure around him, while the performance may leave viewers wanting a clearer view of what that pressure is doing to him. If you enjoy reserved, ambiguous leads, that distance can work as characterization. If you need a more expressive performance to invest in a transformation, the central arc may feel muted.
Who is the series for?
The strongest recommendation is for viewers who already enjoy the franchise and want more of its military-action world, especially those curious about Edwards and his relationship with Reece. Familiarity may deepen the appeal, but the available coverage does not establish that newcomers need to have watched The Terminal List first. The origin setup is legible on its own; the larger payoff is likely greater if you care about the existing characters.

Platform scores point to mixed rather than uniform enthusiasm, and they are snapshots that can change. At the time of the cited listings, Metacritic showed 66/100 from 9 critic reviews (Metacritic); Rotten Tomatoes showed a 75% Tomatometer from 16 reviews and an 80% Popcornmeter from 250+ ratings (Rotten Tomatoes). These are platform aggregates, not population-wide measures or guarantees of an individual viewer’s response. The contrast between the critical and audience figures is consistent with a show whose forceful action may land more strongly than its narrative and lead performance do for some reviewers.
