The Sand Castle is a 2025 Lebanese survival drama on Netflix about a family stranded on a Mediterranean island and waiting to be rescued. It has the ingredients of a thriller, but its slow pace, psychological uncertainty and focus on a child’s perspective make it a more subdued, emotional watch than an action-driven survival film.
What is The Sand Castle about?
Parents Yasmine and Nabil and their children, Adam and Jana, are sheltering in a lighthouse on an uninhabited island somewhere off the coasts of Greece and Turkey. They have basic supplies and are waiting for rescue. As their situation worsens, the film gradually reveals more about the family’s past.

The story is closely shaped by Jana’s imaginative point of view. That perspective helps create the film’s fable-like atmosphere, while leaving viewers uncertain about what has happened and how much they understand. It is best to go in knowing the setup, not the later revelations.
Netflix Tudum’s overview of The Sand Castle describes the island and the family’s predicament.

Is it really a survival thriller?
Yes, but “survival thriller” only partly describes the experience. The family’s isolation and deteriorating circumstances provide suspense, while the film leans more heavily on mood, psychological tension and emotional drama than on action or practical survival problem-solving. Netflix categorizes it as a psychological, understated survival drama and thriller.
That approach may work for viewers who like ambiguity and a reflective pace. Those looking for constant danger, brisk plotting or a clear explanation of events may find its storytelling oblique. Tom’s Guide praised the performances and humanitarian resonance but said the mood-piece approach could feel unfocused. In a review quoted by Tom’s Guide, Variety critic Manuel Betancourt wrote: “While Matty Brown’s dreamy film plays more like a children’s fable than the harrowing thriller it sometimes flirts with becoming, its oblique stab at storytelling ends up muddling its ambitious vision and well-intended message.”

That is one critic’s assessment, not a measure of general audience opinion. Tom’s Guide reported that Rotten Tomatoes had no score logged on Jan. 24, 2025; that dated snapshot does not establish the site’s current status.
