Blink Twice is a 2024 thriller and Zoë Kravitz’s feature directorial debut. Channing Tatum plays a tech billionaire who invites cocktail waitress Frida, played by Naomi Ackie, to his private island; when unsettling events disrupt the retreat, Frida begins investigating. The film explores abuse of power and sexual violence, but this guide keeps its plot turns under wraps.
1. What is Blink Twice about?
Frida meets tech billionaire Slater King and accepts an invitation to his private island. The glamorous retreat soon begins to feel wrong, and Frida tries to understand what is happening. That premise sets up the film’s central uncertainty without giving away its reveals. Apple TV’s US catalog listing describes the same basic setup.
2. It was Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut
Kravitz directed the film, which Amazon MGM Studios released theatrically in the United States on August 23, 2024. That is the US release date; international release dates may differ. The official Amazon MGM Studios trailer credits Kravitz as director.
3. The cast brings together familiar faces
Naomi Ackie and Channing Tatum lead the film as Frida and Slater King. The principal cast also includes Christian Slater, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Geena Davis, Kyle MacLachlan, and Alia Shawkat. Apple TV’s listing gives the cast and a runtime of 1 hour 42 minutes.

4. Its darkness comes from its subject matter
Kravitz described the film’s themes as “Power dynamics, the abuse of power, sexual violence: These are some of the themes that we are exploring on-screen,” in an August 23, 2024 interview with The Washington Post. She said the project grew out of conversations and experiences involving women around powerful people. That is the director’s account of the film’s intent, not a claim that the story documents a particular real case.
5. The film was first developed under a different title
Kravitz told The Washington Post that audience testing showed women were alienated by the project’s more provocative working title. She wanted women to come see the film, explaining, “But if I can’t even get women into the theater to feel that message, there’s no point.” ABC News also reported her explanation. This was her stated reason for changing the title, not evidence that a regulator ordered the change.

6. The island draws on Eden and Lord of the Flies
Kravitz cited the Garden of Eden and William Golding’s Lord of the Flies as inspirations for the island concept. In The Washington Post interview, she described stories that take away the ordinary structures of life and reveal what people do without them. The film also plays with the contrast between a beautiful, seemingly safe setting and the unease that develops there.
7. What content should viewers know about?
For US viewers, Apple TV lists the film as R-rated for strong violent content, sexual assault, drug use, language throughout, and some sexual references. The platform labels it 17+ in its catalog. These are platform-provided content descriptors; viewers sensitive to those subjects may want to take them into account before watching.

8. You can discuss its themes without spoiling its turns
Kravitz has said it is possible to talk about the film’s themes without revealing specific plot twists. For viewers deciding whether it is for them, the useful context is its focus on power, abuse of power, and sexual violence—not a turn-by-turn explanation of what happens. Questions such as “Wait, what just happened?” or “Was that revenge?” are part of how The Washington Post interview framed viewers’ reactions; they are prompts for interpretation, not answers to be settled here.
