Edgar Wright’s 2025 The Running Man is a fast-moving, violent chase film with a charismatic Glen Powell at its center. Its premise has sharper satirical potential than the film’s action consistently delivers: the spectacle lands more reliably than the critique of the media machine that turns desperate people into entertainment. It is based on Stephen King’s novel, not a continuation of the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film.
Does The Running Man work as an action film?
Mostly, yes. The contest gives the film a clear engine: contestants known as Runners must survive 30 days while a televised pursuit turns their danger into a public spectacle. The premise keeps the story moving, and the film’s 133-minute runtime gives it room to extend that pursuit across a feature-length adventure.
The critical response recognizes that momentum, though not without reservations. Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed critics’ consensus says the film “maintains a slick stride,” while judging that it does not meet Edgar Wright’s high bar for inventive action extravaganzas. RogerEbert.com similarly describes a film that “hits the ground running and rarely stops,” but calls it “wildly imperfect.” Those are critics’ assessments, not a guarantee that every viewer will find the pacing or action equally effective.
Can Glen Powell carry the lead?
Powell plays Ben Richards, a working-class father pushed toward the contest by financial desperation and the need to help his sick daughter. That pressure makes Ben more than a contestant chasing a prize: his choice exposes how the show can turn limited options into a marketable story of survival.

Powell brings the role a confident screen presence that helps hold the chase together. Critics have praised his charisma, but RogerEbert.com’s review argues that he is not enough to carry the film alone. The distinction matters: Powell’s appeal is a strength, while the film’s momentum and supporting dramatic material still have to do their share.
Does the media satire cut through the spectacle?
The show inside the film is built to make violence watchable. Ben’s pursuit is broadcast, and audience attention becomes part of the contest’s machinery. That setup gives the story room to probe who profits when fear and suffering are packaged as entertainment.

The result appears less forceful as satire than as action. The Associated Press review finds that the forward drive of the chase does not fully combine with the film’s comic hijinks and weightier themes of inequality and antiauthoritarianism. It also points to an AI-related media-manipulation subtext. The central tension is therefore not whether the film has ideas, but whether its spectacle sharpens them. For critics, the action tends to come through more clearly than the critique.
How does the 2025 film relate to the novel and the 1987 movie?
The 2025 film is an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, directed by Edgar Wright and written by Wright and Michael Bacall. It is a new version of the source material, rather than a sequel to the 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Both screen versions draw on the same underlying contest premise, but the available comparisons do not establish a scene-by-scene account of how either film changes the novel. It would be too strong to call the 2025 version more faithful without directly comparing the book and both adaptations. For viewers deciding what to expect, the useful distinction is that Wright’s film returns to King’s story rather than continuing the earlier movie’s storyline.
