The Rookie’s “The Return” brings back Seth Ridley, the rookie whose lies cost him the trust of his team, and asks whether one brave act can change how they see him. The episode is Season 7, Episode 16, which ABC lists as airing April 29, 2025. This review discusses the major spoiler—Seth’s injury and its consequence—after the warning below.
What is “The Return” about?
ABC’s synopsis places three threads in the episode: a familiar face comes back hoping to prove himself, an influencer directs fans against Wesley, and Tim helps Lucy prepare for the sergeant’s exam. The returning officer is Seth Ridley, played by Patrick Keleher. Earlier in the season, Lucy uncovered Seth’s lies, including a false cancer claim; TheWrap reports that he was removed from the team after refusing a blood test and an order.
That history gives the episode a sharper starting point than a routine return-to-work story. Seth may be back in uniform, but his colleagues have reason to distrust him. The tension is not whether he can walk into the station again; it is whether he can do anything that makes his presence there feel earned.
Spoilers: does Seth’s return earn its cost?

During a shootout, Seth saves Nolan and is injured; the injury leads to the amputation of his leg. Keleher told TV Insider that Seth’s action was instinctive, not a calculated bid to prove himself. “I think he wasn’t trying to prove himself. I think that was a very natural instinct, he just saw and he acted the way that he naturally did,” he said.

Trust is not the same as redemption
The sequence gives Seth a consequential choice without erasing the choices that made his colleagues wary. That distinction is the episode’s strongest dramatic instinct: a life-saving act can reveal something real about him, but it cannot retroactively make his deception harmless. The station’s cold reaction when he returns, which Keleher discussed in the interview, keeps that distrust visible rather than granting him an instant welcome.
The episode’s risk is that the physical consequence is so severe it can do too much emotional work at once. Seth’s loss gives the return undeniable weight, but it could also steer viewers toward treating suffering as proof of character. “The Return” is more convincing when the moment is read as evidence of an instinct to help, not a complete moral accounting. Seth’s future remains unresolved; neither the episode nor Keleher’s comments establish that his policing career is settled.

The shock lands, but the turn is abrupt
The amputation makes the episode’s title feel less like a tease and more like a turning point. Still, the movement from damaged trust to a heroic act happens quickly. The action can complicate the team’s judgment of Seth, but it cannot plausibly repair the relationship in a single scene. That compression is the episode’s chief weakness: the consequence is emotionally large, while the change in how others might understand Seth is only beginning.

The other plots offer a useful change of scale. Wesley facing an influencer who directs followers against him brings a public, digitally amplified conflict alongside the immediate danger of Seth’s return. Tim’s support as Lucy studies for the sergeant’s exam is quieter, grounding the episode in professional ambition and the trust between the two characters.

These threads keep “The Return” from becoming a single-issue character study, though the Seth plot naturally dominates once the shootout begins. Wesley’s conflict supplies a different kind of pressure; Lucy and Tim’s exam storyline gives the hour a more personal rhythm. Neither carries the same consequence as Seth’s arc, but together they provide tonal contrast rather than competing for the episode’s emotional center.
