Pearl Jam’s early name was Mookie Blaylock, after the NBA point guard. The band later changed it amid reported concerns about the player’s rights, but kept the basketball connection in its debut album title, Ten. Eddie Vedder also told a vivid story about his great-grandmother Pearl and a hallucinogenic jam recipe; it is an anecdote, not a verified explanation of the band’s name. The precise origin of “Pearl Jam” remains unsettled.
Mookie Blaylock was the band’s early name
The musicians used the name Mookie Blaylock early in their career. KIRO 7 places it at the band’s first public show on October 22, 1990, and the Guardian identifies the namesake as the NBA player. KIRO 7’s historical account and the Guardian’s retrospective document that early connection.
Jeff Ament’s account of the quick choice
Jeff Ament recalled that the musicians bought basketball cards while recording and had not settled on a band name when they needed to turn in a tape. Later, as they needed a name for a tour, someone noticed a Mookie Blaylock card and suggested using the player’s name. Ament’s recollection, given in 2008 and quoted by KIRO 7, describes a practical, basketball-inspired choice—not a carefully planned permanent identity.
Why the band changed its name
The Guardian reports that after signing with Epic, the group changed its name because of concerns that using Mookie Blaylock could infringe the player’s rights. The available accounts establish a reported rights concern, not a lawsuit, court ruling, or legal order compelling the change.

How Ten kept the basketball connection
The band did not leave the reference behind when it dropped the player’s name. The album title Ten honors Blaylock’s jersey number, 10, as both KIRO 7 and Vedder’s 1991 interview connect the title to the player. The debut record thus preserved a link to the band’s early name without using it as the group’s own name.
Was Pearl Jam named after Eddie Vedder’s great-grandmother?
In a December 7, 1991 interview, Vedder said the name was “open to interpretation” and told a story about his great-grandmother Pearl, her marriage to a Native American described in the interview as a chief, and a family jam recipe altered with peyote and other hallucinogens. The interview is evidence that Vedder told the story; it does not independently verify the recipe or establish that it supplied the band’s actual name.
