The series presents Harfoots as Second Age predecessors to Hobbits—not as settled residents of the Shire.
Who are Nori and Poppy?
Nori Brandyfoot, whose full name is Elanor “Nori” Brandyfoot, is played by Markella Kavenagh. Poppy Proudfellow is played by Megan Richards. Amazon introduced both characters in its official series character announcement, grouping them with other Harfoots, including Sadoc Burrows, played by Lenny Henry.
They belong to the Harfoots, a community the series places in Middle-earth’s Second Age. Amazon describes Harfoots as predecessors to Hobbits, and says the show is set thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. That framing connects them to the familiar Hobbit world while establishing a much earlier setting.
Are Nori and Poppy Hobbits?
They are Harfoots, which the series describes as Hobbit predecessors. The label matters: the show distinguishes their way of life from that of Shire Hobbits. In Amazon’s official cast feature, Kavenagh says the groups share physical similarities, but their circumstances differ: “The Hobbits from Shire have their home. The Harfoots are actively searching for that sense of stability.”

That is an actor’s description of the show’s portrayal, not a complete account of every distinction in Tolkien’s writings. It gives viewers a useful point of contrast: Shire Hobbits are associated with an established home, while the Harfoots’ circumstances in the series involve searching for stability. Are Nori and Poppy characters from Tolkien’s books?
The official material cited here establishes Nori and Poppy as characters in the television adaptation; it does not establish that these named characters or their on-screen stories are drawn directly from Tolkien’s books. The series adapts Tolkien’s world and sets its story in the Second Age, but viewers should treat Nori and Poppy’s particular character stories as part of The Rings of Power unless a specific source confirms otherwise.

Showrunner J.D. Payne has described the adaptation challenge as a product of the team’s affection for the material: “The best part and the hardest part were the same thing: We love Tolkien so much. We love this material so much that we set a bar really high for ourselves and wanted to live up to it.” The comment appears in Amazon’s cast and producers Q&A.

GamesRadar reports that co-showrunner Payne said the Harfoots would take “a little bit more of a backseat” in season 3, after viewers last saw Nori and Poppy in the season 2 finale. Payne’s reported comment also cautioned, “never count a Halfling out.” This is a secondary report about their reduced prominence, not confirmation that the characters cannot return.
