A reported dispute over catering was the trigger for the confrontation, not the formal reason the BBC gave for ending Clarkson’s contract.
What the BBC found
The BBC’s investigation, led by Ken MacQuarrie, concluded that Tymon was the victim of an unprovoked physical and verbal attack. The physical assault lasted about 30 seconds and ended when a witness intervened. Tymon’s lip was swollen and bleeding; he did not retaliate and later went to an accident-and-emergency department for examination. The investigation also found that Clarkson’s verbal abuse continued during and after the incident, including threats to sack Tymon. The BBC’s published summary of the findings set out the incident and the corporation’s response.

On March 25, 2015, BBC Director-General Tony Hall announced that Clarkson’s contract would not be renewed. Hall said the decision followed careful consideration of the facts and meetings with both men. He described Clarkson as having “crossed a line” and said there could not be one standard for ordinary staff and another for a star presenter. Hall’s announcement and the investigation summary explain the BBC’s stated rationale.
Was it really about a steak or a missing hot meal?
Contemporary accounts said the confrontation began after filming, when the production team could not provide a hot meal or suitable catering. That reported disagreement helps explain how the argument started, but the BBC did not cite dinner, a steak, or a catering failure as the reason for ending Clarkson’s contract. Its investigation focused on the attack, the verbal abuse and threats, Tymon’s injury, and the distress caused to him. Calling the departure a firing “over a steak” confuses the reported trigger with the conduct that led to the employment decision.

How the events unfolded
- March 4, 2015: While the Top Gear team was working in North Yorkshire, the incident involving Clarkson and producer Oisin Tymon took place at Simonstone Hall Hotel.
- March 9: Clarkson reported the incident to BBC management.
- March 10: The BBC suspended Clarkson while it investigated.
- March 25: After reviewing the findings and meeting with both men, Hall said the BBC would not renew Clarkson’s contract.
- April 7: North Yorkshire Police said it would take no further action.
Why the incident was a final breach
The March 2015 attack was the immediate cause of Clarkson’s departure, but it came after earlier disciplinary trouble. In 2014, the BBC gave him a final warning following controversy over unaired footage in which he appeared to use a racist term while reciting a nursery rhyme. Contemporary reporting said that warning formed part of the disciplinary background when the BBC decided not to renew his contract. Reporting on the contract decision and coverage of the 2014 warning document that context.
- Not the immediate cause: Earlier offensive comments and controversies were not the incident that ended his contract.
- The immediate cause: The BBC’s investigation found that he had physically and verbally attacked Tymon.
- Why it was decisive: Clarkson was already on a final warning, and the BBC said workplace standards applied to its star presenters as well as other staff.
Why police taking no further action did not reverse the BBC decision
North Yorkshire Police’s April 7 decision was separate from the BBC’s employment investigation. Police said they had completed their inquiries and would take no further action after Tymon indicated that he did not wish police action to be taken on his behalf. That outcome did not overturn the BBC’s earlier conclusion or mean that the corporation found no misconduct; the BBC had made its contract decision on the basis of its own findings and standards. North Yorkshire Police’s decision records the separate outcome.

What Clarkson said afterward—and what happened to the presenters
In a BBC Radio 2 interview in May 2015, Clarkson described losing Top Gear as “my own silly fault,” accepting personal responsibility for his departure. He also said the show had been a major part of his professional identity. The Guardian’s report on the interview captures his later characterization; it supplements rather than replaces the BBC’s findings.
Clarkson did not appear in future BBC Top Gear programmes. Richard Hammond and James May did not continue the established trio with a replacement presenter. The three later reunited with former Top Gear executive producer Andy Wilman for Amazon’s The Grand Tour. That was what followed Clarkson’s exit, not evidence that a commercial strategy caused it. The BBC’s announcement of The Grand Tour reported the new show.
