He spent about a decade at McLaren
Priestley’s professional biography and the publisher biography for his book place his McLaren years from 2000 to 2009. He worked as a Formula One mechanic and on the pit-stop crew. Penguin’s biography of Priestley and his professional biography describe that period.
-
His pit-stop work covered several positions
Priestley lists experience as wheel-on and wheel-off crew, wheel-gun operator, front and rear jack operator, refueller, and nose-on and nose-off crew. These were different roles performed at different times, not simultaneous duties. The range illustrates how hands-on work is distributed across a pit crew.

He worked during the careers of prominent F1 drivers
The publisher biography names Mika Häkkinen, David Coulthard, Kimi Räikkönen, Jean Alesi, Juan Pablo Montoya, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton among the drivers Priestley worked with. That establishes professional overlap; it does not mean he was each driver’s personal mechanic throughout their career.
-
He was at McLaren during Hamilton’s 2008 title season
Priestley has spoken about the pressure surrounding McLaren’s 2008 championship campaign. He worked within the team during the season Lewis Hamilton won the World Drivers’ Championship; that achievement belonged to the team effort, not to any one mechanic.
