The NBA is expanding its NBA App into an always-on basketball hub—but not every game is becoming free. The service, introduced alongside a reimagined NBA TV on October 15, 2025, combines live and on-demand programming, highlights, original shows and coverage from basketball leagues around the world. Paid NBA TV, League Pass and partner services remain part of the live-game picture.
Yes—but “free streaming channel” needs a qualification. Beginning October 15, 2025, the NBA expanded the NBA App into an always-on basketball destination and introduced a reimagined NBA TV. The service combines live and on-demand programming, highlights, original shows and basketball coverage from the NBA, WNBA, G League, Basketball Africa League and leagues around the world.
That does not mean every NBA game is now free. The NBA’s live-game rights remain split among ABC/ESPN, NBC/Peacock, Prime Video, local broadcasters, NBA TV and NBA League Pass. The NBA App may be the place where you find a game, but it can send you to a subscription service or another broadcaster to watch it.
What the NBA is actually launching
The NBA announced its new multi-platform streaming offering and reimagined NBA TV for Wednesday, October 15, 2025. Both are accessible through the NBA App, which the league describes as a digital home for basketball operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The offering is broader than a conventional team or league stream. It is designed to bring together:
- NBA TV programming and regular-season games;
- live and on-demand games and highlights from other basketball properties;
- NBA and WNBA news, analysis and original programming;
- coverage of the G League and Basketball Africa League;
- games and programming from international competitions, including Australia’s NBL, France’s LNB, Germany’s BBL, Spain’s Liga ACB, China’s CBA and Korea’s KBL; and
- basketball culture, player features and other material intended to keep the app useful between games.
“The Association” is the flagship studio show
One of the central programs is The Association, a weeknight primetime basketball-cast featuring MJ Acosta-Ruiz, David Fizdale, Rudy Gay, Chris Haynes and John Wall among other contributors. The show is built around league news, analysis, current storylines, players and basketball culture.
That programming helps explain what the NBA means by an always-on destination. The proposition is not simply “press play when a game begins.” It is a continuous channel-like experience made up of games, studio shows, highlights, documentaries, analysis and international basketball.

What is free—and what still requires payment?
A free NBA ID account provides access to personalization and other NBA App features. The app also offers free highlights and selected programming. But a free account should not be confused with universal free access to live NBA games.

The distinction matters because the headline can easily be read as “the NBA has made all of its games free.” That is not what the NBA’s access model says.

Where NBA games are distributed in 2025–26
The NBA’s current national-rights arrangement begins with the 2025–26 season and is scheduled to run through 2035–36. National games are distributed across ABC/ESPN, NBC/Peacock and Prime Video. The league’s 2025–26 schedule guide identified 247 national games across ABC, ESPN, NBC, Peacock and Amazon.
The guide also says every national game is available through a broadly distributed streaming service associated with its broadcaster:

The arrangement includes approximately 75 regular-season games on broadcast television each season, compared with the previous minimum of 15. That creates meaningful opportunities for free over-the-air viewing, but it still does not make the complete schedule free. A game may be national, local, broadcast-only, streaming-only or subject to a League Pass blackout depending on the matchup and the viewer’s location.
Tap to Watch: the NBA App as a front door
The NBA’s separate Tap to Watch initiative addresses one of the most frustrating parts of modern sports streaming: finding which service actually carries a particular game.
Starting with the 2025–26 season, a viewer can use a Watch button on NBA.com, in the NBA App, on team websites and on selected third-party platforms. The NBA says the feature uses the game and the viewer’s location to route that person to the appropriate national, local or League Pass stream.
In practical terms, the NBA App can function as the discovery layer even when it is not the video provider. You might open the app, select a game and then be directed to ESPN, Peacock, Prime Video, a local broadcaster or League Pass. That is a significant convenience improvement, but it is not a subscription bypass.

The NBA identified Google, Meta, X, Snap, Reddit, Roku and Dapper Labs among the initial digital and platform partners for Tap to Watch. It also said further integrations involving FanDuel, Fanatics, Yahoo Sports and other digital and connected-TV partners were planned during the season. Availability and exact behavior may vary by location and platform.
How to watch the NBA App on a television
- Install the NBA App on a supported smart TV, streaming device or mobile platform.
- Sign in with an NBA ID, or create a free account if you do not already have one.
- Open the game or program you want to watch.
- Use the Watch button or the app’s viewing information to identify the correct provider.
- Sign in to the required service if the stream is supplied by ESPN, Peacock, Prime Video, League Pass, NBA TV or another broadcaster.
The NBA Help Center lists Amazon Fire TV and Firestick among supported platforms for NBA App access. If your television does not already support the app, an Amazon Fire TV Stick is one practical way to add a compatible streaming endpoint. It can also consolidate other streaming apps in one interface.
Important: a Fire TV device does not unlock subscription games, remove blackouts or replace an NBA TV, League Pass, ESPN, Peacock or Prime Video subscription. It is hardware for accessing the service—not a way around the service’s rights restrictions.
Can an antenna get free NBA games?
Sometimes. An indoor HDTV antenna can receive eligible NBA games broadcast over the air by a local station. This is most useful for cord-cutters who live within range of the relevant station and whose local market carries the game.

Before buying one, check the specific game’s listing and your local station coverage. Broadcast rights are game- and market-dependent, and an antenna’s reception also depends on distance, building materials, placement and local signal conditions.
Is this a FAST channel like Pluto TV or Roku Channel?
Not conclusively, based on the NBA materials reviewed for this article. The sports-streaming industry commonly uses the term FAST—free ad-supported streaming television—to describe always-on channels distributed through services such as Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Xumo and similar platforms.
NBC Sports, for example, describes NBC Sports NOW as a free 24/7 channel available through Peacock, the NBC Sports app, The Roku Channel, Pluto TV, Xumo and other platforms. That broader market trend makes “free streaming channel” a plausible shorthand for the NBA’s new channel-like experience.
However, the NBA’s official announcement describes the NBA App and a reimagined NBA TV. It does not, by itself, conclusively document a separate, fully free NBA-branded FAST channel available on Roku, Pluto TV or every other FAST platform. Viewers should check the current NBA App, NBA.com Watch pages and platform catalogs before assuming that a particular channel exists in their country or region.

What viewers should expect in practice
The NBA’s strategy centralizes discovery while leaving distribution fragmented behind the scenes. The app can make it easier to locate a game, but the final destination still depends on rights, geography and the type of content being requested.
If you want highlights and basketball programming
Start with the free NBA App/NBA ID experience. Highlights, news, studio programming and selected content are the clearest part of the free offering.
If you want a particular live national game
Use the NBA App or Tap to Watch to identify whether the game is on ABC/ESPN, NBC/Peacock, Prime Video or another outlet. Then confirm whether your existing subscription or provider access covers it.
If you want out-of-market games throughout the season
NBA League Pass remains the principal subscription route, subject to blackout and market rules. The NBA App may help you reach the purchase or viewing page, but it does not eliminate those restrictions.

Use the NBA App as the front door, use Tap to Watch to find the right destination and check the specific game’s listing before assuming it is free. The headline is fair as shorthand; “every NBA game is now free” is not.
