Liam Neeson’s The Naked Gun reboot is a brisk, often amusing attempt to revive the franchise, but its jokes do not land consistently—and Neeson’s Frank Drebin Jr. lacks the uncanny deadpan fit Leslie Nielsen brought to the original. The result is more spirited than essential: worth a look for fans of broad, fast-moving parody, though it does not fully recapture the old Police Squad chemistry.
What is the 2025 The Naked Gun about?
Directed by Akiva Schaffer, the 2025 film stars Liam Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., taking over the Police Squad legacy associated with his father. Paramount’s official synopsis promises “Only one man has the particular set of skills… to lead Police Squad and save the world!” The cast includes Pamela Anderson as Beth Davenport, Paul Walter Hauser as Ed Hocken Jr., CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu and Danny Huston. Paramount Global Content lists the film as a comedy and gives its premiere date as August 1, 2025. Paramount Global Content’s film record identifies the central cast and roles.
The setup gives the movie a police case to move through, while leaving room for the franchise’s real attraction: absurd sight gags, wordplay and a hero who treats nonsense as serious business. That familiar structure is a useful starting point, but the reboot’s success depends on the performance and the jokes, not simply on returning to Police Squad.
Does Liam Neeson work as Frank Drebin?
Neeson commits to the straight-faced approach rather than winking at the audience. His gravelly, stern screen presence creates an immediate comic contrast with Drebin’s blundering logic, and that contrast is the film’s clearest argument for casting him. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus praised his “gravelly gravitas” as a fit for Drebin’s deadpan buffoonery.

The counterargument is that a convincing deadpan is more than a serious voice. Leslie Nielsen made Drebin’s absurdity seem effortless; Neeson’s familiar dramatic intensity can make the joke visible without making the character feel like the same comic instrument. Associated Press critic Jake Coyle awarded the film two stars out of four and wrote: “He’s plenty game; commitment isn’t the issue. But in this sometimes witty ode to the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker style of satire, the role never feels quite right for him, despite the phonetic connections.” That is a specific criticism of casting fit, not a claim that Neeson fails to try.
Do the jokes and crime plot work?
The reboot favors a high frequency of gags: visual disruptions, verbal misdirection and deliberately foolish turns that keep the comedy moving. Some are sharp enough to reward the film’s deadpan delivery; others arrive so quickly that the movie can feel like a sequence of attempts rather than a steadily building comic rhythm. Its short running time helps it stay nimble, but speed cannot make every joke land.

The crime plot supplies a basic through-line for Drebin and his colleagues, and it gives the set pieces a reason to unfold in sequence. It is not the most memorable element, however. When the case carries the film forward, it supports the comedy; when it occupies too much attention, it can interrupt the gag-driven momentum. The balance is uneven rather than disastrous, which makes the reboot entertaining in patches instead of an unbroken run of laughs.
How does it compare with the original trilogy?
The key comparison is not whether the new movie repeats the originals’ exact jokes, but whether it recreates their comic mechanism: a performer treating ridiculous events with absolute seriousness while the film’s visual and verbal nonsense escalates around him. Neeson supplies the seriousness, and Schaffer keeps the gags coming. The less reliable ingredient is the effortless character chemistry Nielsen gave the premise.

Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus sees the reboot as reviving the original trilogy’s “daffy sense of humor,” while Coyle calls it “spirited but just off-the-mark” and suggests its best effect may be sending viewers back to the original. Those positions capture the divide: the new film understands the broad style, but whether that is enough depends on how much you value the original’s particular lead performance.
What are the ratings, runtime and content advisories?
Paramount+ lists the film as PG-13 with a runtime of 1 hour 25 minutes. The British Board of Film Classification’s home-entertainment listing gives 85 minutes 34 seconds; listings can differ slightly, so neither should be treated as a universal frame-accurate runtime. The BBFC record, dated September 2, 2025, includes advisories for violence and sex references, among other content.

For the U.S. PG-13 rating, Paramount’s 2025 announcement cites “crude/sexual material, violence/bloody images and brief partial nudity.” That U.S. rating guidance and the BBFC’s UK classification are separate systems and should not be read as interchangeable.

Paramount+ announced that the film would premiere on its service in the U.S. and Canada on September 30, 2025, and its current title page labels it “Now Streaming.” The announcement establishes those territories, not worldwide availability; check the service in your location for current access. Paramount also said viewership of the three original films on Paramount+ rose 84% during the first month of the reboot’s theatrical window. That is the studio’s own platform-specific figure, not an independent measure of broader franchise demand.

How did critics and audiences respond?
Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 88% Tomatometer from 338 reviews and a 72% Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 verified ratings when accessed on October 4, 2026. These are changing aggregates, not permanent scores. The critics consensus praised Neeson’s deadpan and the return of the franchise’s comic spirit; the audience summary likewise said he “hits the mark as Drebin.” Coyle’s two-star AP review supplies a clear dissenting view: the film has energy and some wit, but Neeson never feels quite right in the role.
Is the reboot worth watching?
Watch it if you enjoy broad, rapid-fire parody and want to see how a new cast approaches the Police Squad formula. It has enough successful gags and earnest absurdity to make the revival worthwhile, and Neeson’s sternness is a comic asset when the material clicks. Go in expecting an uneven comedy rather than a replacement for Nielsen’s Drebin: the jokes vary in strength, the case sometimes slows the comic flow, and the lead performance does not reproduce the original’s distinctive ease.
