O’Connor did not write the song: her 1990 cover made it closely associated with her. The anniversary performance was distinct from O’Connor’s own 1992 appearance on Saturday Night Live.
What happened during the SNL50 performance?
Cyrus and Howard sang “Nothing Compares 2 U” together as part of SNL50: The Anniversary Special, the February 16 anniversary celebration. This was the televised anniversary special, not the separate SNL50: The Homecoming Concert. The official SNL performance video identifies the song and performers.
Pitchfork reports that Aubrey Plaza introduced the pair, they traded verses, and Howard played a guitar solo. Rolling Stone Australia also credits the Roots in its report on the performance. Those reported details describe the musical arrangement without implying that the duet recreated O’Connor’s original recording.
Why was the song a tribute to Sinéad O’Connor?
Prince wrote “Nothing Compares 2 U.” O’Connor’s 1990 cover became the version most closely identified with the song, so performing it at SNL50 naturally evoked her musical legacy. Contemporary reports framed Cyrus and Howard’s rendition as an homage to O’Connor while retaining Prince’s authorship credit. Variety’s coverage and the Los Angeles Times review place the performance in that tribute context.

Was the duet about O’Connor’s 1992 SNL controversy?
The available coverage supports describing the SNL50 rendition as a nod to O’Connor’s music; it does not establish that Cyrus and Howard directly addressed the controversy surrounding O’Connor’s 1992 SNL appearance. The two events should not be conflated.
In particular, accounts that say O’Connor performed “Nothing Compares 2 U” on SNL in 1992 before tearing a photograph of Pope John Paul II combine separate events inaccurately. Georgia Public Broadcasting flags that false sequence in its review of the anniversary special. The SNL50 duet recalled O’Connor’s musical legacy; it was not a reenactment of her 1992 appearance.
