The Naked Gun is a released 2025 comedy reboot starring Liam Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., the next generation of the Police Squad character. Akiva Schaffer directed, and Seth MacFarlane produced. The film premiered in U.S. theaters on August 1, 2025, and Paramount announced its Paramount+ debut in the United States and Canada for September 30, 2025. Availability can differ by country.
What is The Naked Gun (2025) about?
Paramount describes Neeson’s character, Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., as following in his father’s footsteps to lead Police Squad. The studio’s official teaser frames the premise as one man taking on the job of leading the squad and saving the world. That line is promotional copy, not confirmed film dialogue, and the official synopsis does not establish a more detailed plot.
Who is in the cast and who made the film?
Paramount’s cast listing includes:
- Liam Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr.
- Pamela Anderson
- Paul Walter Hauser

Akiva Schaffer directed the film. Paramount identifies Seth MacFarlane as a producer, and the official trailer description credits Dan Gregor and Doug Mand alongside Schaffer on the screenplay. Paramount’s film page and official teaser provide the studio’s cast and creative credits.

How does the reboot connect to the earlier films?
The new film carries forward the Police Squad premise with Frank Drebin Jr., while the earlier theatrical films starred Leslie Nielsen. Paramount identifies three predecessors:
- The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)
- The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear (1991)
- Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult (1994)
Those titles establish the franchise lineage, but they do not by themselves establish how the reboot’s humor or quality compares with the earlier movies. The three original films and the 2025 reboot can be approached as separate entries in the same comedy franchise. Paramount’s announcement groups the reboot with the three Nielsen films.
