Is The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare based on a true story? Yes—but only as a starting point. Guy Ritchie’s 2024 action-comedy draws on Operation Postmaster, a real British raid in neutral Spanish territory during World War II, then turns that episode into a swaggering, heavily embellished action adventure. It’s lively entertainment, not a close reconstruction.
What is the film about?
Directed and co-written by Guy Ritchie, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is a 2024 action-comedy led by Henry Cavill and Alan Ritchson, with Eiza González, Alex Pettyfer, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Babs Olusamokun, Henrique Zaga, Til Schweiger, Henry Golding and Cary Elwes among its ensemble cast. The official synopsis says the film was inspired by recently declassified British War Department files; that phrasing signals a historical prompt, not a promise of strict accuracy. The official synopsis and credits also frame the story around a covert group operating against Nazi Germany.
The US Apple TV listing identifies it as a 2024 Lionsgate release. That listing does not establish current viewing availability or subscription inclusion in every country. See the US Apple TV listing.
How much of it is true?
The historical anchor is Operation Postmaster, carried out by Britain’s Special Operations Executive (SOE) in January 1942. The target was a group of ships in Fernando Po, then a Spanish colony. The Associated Press reports that British operatives entered the port and took several vessels, including the Italian merchant ship Duchessa d’Aosta. The neutral setting made the raid an unusually audacious operation. The Associated Press review describes the operation and the film’s relationship to it.

The Los Angeles Times reports that documents about the operation were declassified in 2016 and identifies Damien Lewis’s 2014 nonfiction book, Churchill’s Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII, as the film’s book basis. The Los Angeles Times’ film-and-history context offers further background.
That real operation does not authenticate the movie’s escalating action beats or body count. The AP characterizes the film as “a spirited, if grossly exaggerated diversion.” Its core premise has historical roots; its presentation is stylized invention.

Does the action-comedy work?
Ritchie leans into brisk pacing, bold personalities and comic irreverence. The appeal is less the suspense of watching a finely balanced operation unfold than the pleasure of seeing a confident ensemble barrel through one heightened set piece after another. The cast gives the film its engine: Cavill’s central presence and Ritchson’s physicality suit the movie’s outsized tone, while the large supporting lineup keeps the mission moving.
The trade-off is that the film’s comic swagger can make danger feel less consequential. The Associated Press reviewer Jake Coyle summarized the tension between its entertainment value and its awkward blend of tones: “The result is a jauntily entertaining film but also an awkward fusion.” The film is most satisfying when judged as a knowingly exaggerated adventure; viewers seeking a tense, sober account of SOE history may find its approach frustrating.

How does it compare with other action films?
Rotten Tomatoes’ published consensus similarly emphasizes spectacle over suspense. That is an aggregator’s summary rather than a universal verdict, but it captures the movie’s priorities: broad action and showmanship take precedence over the intricacies of a thriller. Read Rotten Tomatoes’ published consensus.
For a documentary-minded viewer, the most important distinction is whether the film makes its relationship to history clear. The “inspired by” premise is a useful signal, and the real raid provides a compelling foundation. But the movie is not a substitute for a factual account of Operation Postmaster or the SOE. Lewis’s Churchill’s Secret Warriors is the identified nonfiction book behind the film for readers who want to follow the historical thread.
