Benjamin Hollingsworth says Brady helped set up his own heartbreak: after Lark overheard an emotional conversation between him and Brie, he had a chance to be honest about his lingering feelings and instead lied. Lark’s ensuing betrayal was real, Hollingsworth says, but that does not mean Brady’s part in the rupture should be ignored.
How Lark’s betrayal unfolds
At Mel and Jack’s wedding, Lark overhears Brady and Brie sharing an emotional conversation. When Lark later asks Brady about Brie, he lies. By the end of the season, Lark has left town with Hazel and the money in Brady’s bank account. Hollingsworth and showrunner Patrick Sean Smith confirm in Maureen Lee Lenker’s December 20, 2024, interview for Entertainment Weekly that Lark carried out the con.
Hollingsworth says Brady should have told the truth
For Hollingsworth, the key failure is not simply that Brady still has feelings for Brie; it is that he does not tell Lark. He says Brady should have stopped dancing with Lark, admitted those feelings, and let her choose whether to stay. Hollingsworth sums up that imagined response as: “That is the proper response.”
He was disappointed when he read Brady’s decision in the script: “There’s a part of me that was let down when I read that about Brady.” In his view, Brady was slipping back into his old habits rather than facing a difficult conversation honestly.

Why Lark does it—and what the betrayal does not excuse
Smith connects Lark’s actions to what she hears at the wedding. “When she overhears the conversation, her emotional reaction and heartbreak to that is what motivated a lot of what ended up happening by the end of the season,” he says. He also notes that Brady does not know this is what motivates her when she leaves.
Hollingsworth understands why Lark is hurt, but he does not think Brady deserved to have all his money stolen. The two ideas sit side by side: Brady’s dishonesty damages the relationship, while Lark’s decision to take his money remains a betrayal in its own right.

The motorcycle-shop lease makes the turn sharper
Before leaving, Lark surprises Brady with the lease to an empty shop he had been considering for a motorcycle business. In Netflix’s cast Q&A, Hollingsworth describes the moment as one in which Brady feels supported in pursuing a dream, which made the scene more dynamic for him. That gesture makes the later departure especially painful: the relationship appears to offer Brady support just before its trust collapses.

In a separate Netflix Tudum interview published March 12, 2026, Hollingsworth discusses Brady’s season 7 trajectory, including his effort to build a legitimate business, Lark taking money as a safety net for Hazel, and the season’s emotional turn around Brie. That is later context, not part of his December 2024 reaction to the season 6 ending. The 2026 interview said season 7 was streaming on Netflix globally at the time of publication; availability may change and can vary by location.
