The film’s later turns are less assured, but Adams gives its increasingly strange premise a vivid emotional center.
What is Nightbitch about?
Written and directed by Marielle Heller, Nightbitch follows a former artist who pauses her career to care for her young child. As isolation and domestic routine close in, her life takes a surreal turn. The transformation is the film’s metaphorical way of giving shape to feelings that are difficult to express; it is not a straightforward story about a woman literally becoming a dog.
The premise brings motherhood, interrupted artistic identity and anger into a comedy-horror framework. That combination can be funny, unsettling or both, depending on the scene and the viewer. The film is based on Rachel Yoder’s novel, and the official trailer identifies that source material. Searchlight Pictures’ official film page gives the concise premise; its official trailer notes the novel adaptation.
Why Amy Adams’s performance stands out
Adams makes the character’s frustration feel lived-in rather than theatrical. She moves between the demands of caregiving, the desire to recover a self beyond motherhood and the increasingly uncanny events without losing the emotional thread. The performance’s physical commitment helps make the film’s metaphor legible even when its story becomes less focused.

In an Associated Press interview, Adams connected her approach to her own earlier experience of motherhood, saying, “I just met her where I was at,” and describing how she brought herself and the character together. That is reported creative context, not evidence that the character’s story is autobiographical. The AP interview with Adams and Heller discusses those connections.
Where the story works—and where it loses momentum
The domestic opening
The early stretch is the film’s clearest: repetitive care work, solitude and creative frustration establish the pressure beneath the surreal premise. In her Associated Press review, Jocelyn Noveck praised Adams as brave and mesmerizing and found the opening scenes especially effective. Her review gives the film two stars out of four.

The later movement
Noveck’s main reservation is that the script becomes less cohesive as it shifts more attention to the marriage and to a subplot involving the protagonist’s mother. The surreal idea initially gives ordinary domestic strain an unusual charge, but the later plot does not sustain that same focus. This is one critic’s assessment, not a universal verdict; viewers who value Adams’s performance and the film’s willingness to be odd may find more to appreciate than the story’s unevenness suggests. Read Noveck’s AP review.
How the adaptation approaches Yoder’s novel
Heller’s film turns the novel’s surreal premise into a visual performance built around Adams, making the protagonist’s internal pressures immediate on screen. The available film and interview sources establish that the movie adapts Rachel Yoder’s novel, but do not support a detailed scene-by-scene account of what was changed or omitted. It is therefore better to treat the film as its own interpretation than to assume it reproduces the book’s structure or emphases.

Heller told the AP that sleep deprivation made her feel closer to mythological thinking: “When you’re sleep deprived, you sort of feel more connected to the mythological world because you’re not in a literal headspace.” That offers a useful lens on the movie’s shifts between ordinary domestic life and mythic strangeness, without making every scene a literal account of the filmmakers’ lives.
Is Nightbitch worth watching?
It is a strong choice if you want a performance-led film that treats maternal exhaustion and lost creative identity through surreal comedy-horror rather than realism. Go in expecting an unusual tonal mix and a story that, in Noveck’s view, becomes less coherent in its later stretch. Adams’s work is the clearest reason to watch; the script’s uneven development is the main qualification.
