The Man in the White Van is worth considering if you enjoy a patient thriller whose 1970s Florida atmosphere and creeping paranoia matter as much as its scares. But the slow build leans on familiar genre choices, and its payoff may leave viewers wanting more for the time it takes to get there.

What is The Man in the White Van about?

Directed by Warren Skeels and starring Madison Wolfe as Annie Williams, The Man in the White Van is a 2024 thriller set in Florida in 1975. Annie’s life changes when a man in a white van begins stalking her. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film at 105 minutes and rates it PG-13. Rotten Tomatoes’ film listing identifies Relativity Media as distributor.

The premise puts the film’s tension in the gap between a young woman’s warnings and the adults around her who do not respond with the urgency she needs. That dynamic gives the story a strong source of dread: the threat is frightening, but so is the possibility that Annie will not be believed in time.

Does the slow burn build suspense?

The film’s gradual approach suits a story about fear taking hold in ordinary life. Unease grows through the sense that danger can intrude on familiar routines, rather than through relentless action. The 1975 setting supports that atmosphere, giving the threat a world in which Annie’s isolation feels especially pronounced.

That patience is also the film’s main pacing risk. At 105 minutes, the buildup has room to settle in, but not every stretch of waiting feels equally productive. When the film revisits the same anxious pattern without deepening it, suspense can start to feel like delay.

What do the nostalgia and paranoia add?

The period setting gives the thriller a warm, lived-in surface: the domestic world around Annie has the appeal of a remembered past, which makes the encroaching danger feel more jarring. The contrast between that sweetness and the stalking premise is one of the film’s most effective ideas. Nostalgia is not just decoration when it makes a threatened everyday life feel worth protecting.

The film’s sharper emotional edge comes from Annie’s vulnerability and the adults’ reluctance to take her fear seriously. That tension is compelling, though the story can make disbelief feel more like a familiar thriller mechanism than a fully examined social reality. The result is paranoia that works best as mood, and less consistently as a credible account of how the people around Annie would respond.

Do the familiar thriller devices work?

The movie uses recognizable suspense machinery: a danger that looms before it is fully understood, warning signs that do not immediately produce decisive action, and character choices that keep the threat in play. Those conventions can be effective because they place viewers ahead of the people who should be protecting Annie. They can also strain credibility when a decision seems designed mainly to prolong the danger.

That friction is central to the viewing experience. When the characters’ choices feel rooted in fear, uncertainty or the limits of their perspective, the tension deepens. When a choice seems to serve the plot more than the character, the familiar device shows through and weakens the unease the film has carefully built.

Is The Man in the White Van based on a true story?

The production company describes the film as based on true events. A December 2024 Flamingo Magazine interview with director Warren Skeels places its historical inspiration in relation to the crimes of Billy Mansfield Jr. in Florida. That establishes a connection to real events, not proof that every scene, character or detail is historically exact. The film should be approached as a dramatized thriller rather than a documentary reconstruction.

Does the ending reward the buildup?

The spoiler-light answer is: only if the accumulating mood is more important to you than a forceful payoff. The film’s slow-burn approach makes the conclusion carry a lot of weight, and viewers who have invested in the suspense may find the resolution less satisfying than the atmosphere that leads to it. The destination does not entirely undo the film’s effective moments, but it may not make the journey feel necessary in retrospect.

Who is this thriller for?

Choose The Man in the White Van for the period atmosphere, domestic unease and gradual tightening of paranoia. It is a less certain pick if you want brisk pacing, unusually fresh thriller mechanics or an ending that delivers a decisive release. The film’s best qualities lie in the uneasy contrast between a nostalgic setting and a threat that Annie struggles to make others see.

Release and availability

According to the production company, the film premiered at the Newport Beach Film Festival in October 2023, opened theatrically on December 13, 2024, and reached VOD in January 2025. Legion M’s project page lists Apple TV, Amazon Prime and Fandango At Home as rental or purchase outlets. That list reflects the company’s stated outlets; availability can vary by country and may change.

How critics and audiences rated it

Rotten Tomatoes showed a 57% Tomatometer from 21 critic reviews and a 69% Popcornmeter from more than 250 ratings when accessed on October 8, 2026. These are snapshots, not fixed scores, and the difference between them suggests critics and audience raters responded differently. The figures provide context, but they do not settle whether the film’s slow pacing and payoff will work for you.
