Those roles were only two corners of a career that moved from military action to music biography, Westerns and crime films. Kilmer died in Los Angeles on April 1, 2025, aged 65; his daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, told the Los Angeles Times that pneumonia was the cause of death.
Why Batman and Huckleberry belong in the same tribute
Kilmer played Bruce Wayne and Batman in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever. The film made him one of the actors to wear the cowl, but it is not the only role that defines his screen legacy.

“Huckleberry” recalls his Doc Holliday in Tombstone. Holliday’s cool humor and physical fragility gave Kilmer a character far removed from the composed superhero. The association also appears in the title of Kilmer’s 2020 memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry, identified as his memoir by the Washington Post.
A career across very different screen worlds
The roles most closely associated with Kilmer show how wide his range of material was. He played a disciplined rival pilot, a rock icon, a legendary Western figure, a comic-book hero and a professional criminal.

#1 Best Overall
| Role | Film | What it adds to the picture |
|---|---|---|
| Iceman | Top Gun | A military-action role built around a controlled, competitive pilot. |
| Jim Morrison | The Doors | A music-biography portrayal of the band’s charismatic frontman. |
| Doc Holliday | Tombstone | A Western performance that supplies the “Huckleberry” connection. |
| Batman / Bruce Wayne | Batman Forever | A leading superhero role in a stylized comic-book film. |
| Chris Shiherlis | Heat | A crime-film role as part of a crew of professional thieves. |
That range matters more than a single ranking of his performances. Kilmer could play authority and bravado, then turn toward characters marked by vulnerability or self-destruction. His filmography resists reducing him to one franchise or one defining transformation.

He had been diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 and underwent two tracheotomies, according to the Associated Press. That serious health history is part of his later life, but it is distinct from the reported cause of death: pneumonia.
