Spoilers for Freida McFadden’s novel and the 2025 film. The movie keeps the book’s central reversal and closing setup, but it changes how Millie fights back and expands the final confrontation. It also condenses Nina’s backstory, reduces Enzo’s role, and replaces the book’s grueling attic punishment with a graphic scene involving a shard of broken plate.
Which book and movie are being compared?
The source is Freida McFadden’s The Housemaid, first published by Bookouture in April 2022. The 2025 film was directed by Paul Feig and written by Rebecca Sonnenshine. Sydney Sweeney plays Millie, Amanda Seyfried plays Nina, Brandon Sklenar plays Andrew, and Michele Morrone plays Enzo. The film was released in theaters on December 19, 2025.
How the book and film differ
| Story element | Novel | 2025 film |
|---|---|---|
| Nina’s history | A substantial section shifts perspective to Nina and gives more space to her history and relationship with Andrew. | Her history is condensed into a narrated sequence framed as a letter to her daughter, Cecelia. |
| Enzo’s role | He has a more substantial part in Nina’s escape planning and in events after she leaves the house. | His contribution is smaller. |
| Millie’s attic punishment | Andrew makes Millie lie on the floor for hours with heavy hardcover books balanced on her stomach. | After Millie breaks a prized plate, Andrew locks her in the attic and forces her to cut herself with a shard. |
| What helps Millie fight back | Nina leaves pepper spray, which helps Millie turn against Andrew. | The object is a cake knife, which Millie uses to attack Andrew and escape the attic. |
| Final confrontation | The resolution differs from the film’s longer confrontation. | The confrontation is extended with additional intimidation and punishment, changing Andrew’s outcome. |
| Closing setup | Millie interviews for another housemaid job, with the prospective employer apparently dealing with an abusive husband. | The film retains this recognizable closing setup. |
Why the film changes Nina’s story and Enzo’s role
The novel gives Nina’s account more room and places readers inside her perspective for an extended stretch. The film delivers the revelations more quickly through a narrated sequence framed as a letter to Cecelia. That compression changes both pacing and point of view: the book lingers with Nina’s account, while the movie moves back toward Millie’s story sooner.
Enzo also has less to do on screen. In the novel, he contributes to Nina’s escape planning and remains involved in the aftermath; the film reduces those functions. Together, these changes streamline the story around the central household conflict.

What happens differently in the attic?
Andrew’s punishment of Millie is one of the sharpest changes in tone. The book’s ordeal is sustained and physically oppressive: Millie must lie still beneath heavy books for hours. The film instead makes the punishment graphic and immediately visible, using a shard from the broken plate in the attic.
That change sets up a different way for Millie to fight back. In the book, Nina leaves pepper spray. In the film, she leaves a cake knife, which Millie uses against Andrew as she escapes. The changed object leads into the movie’s longer, harsher final confrontation rather than the book’s different resolution.

How the movie changes the ending
The film preserves the broad closing image of Millie interviewing for another housemaid position, but it builds to that scene differently. Its expanded confrontation changes Andrew’s outcome and gives the attic sequence a more extended payoff. So the ending is not simply a new final scene: the route to it, including the means Millie uses to turn the tables, has changed.
Feig described the adaptation as staying close to the book’s structure while extending its conclusion: “Yeah, we stuck pretty close to the book and the structure of the book. The main things we changed. We added on to the ending. So we expanded the ending, because the book ends very satisfyingly for a book, but not satisfyingly enough for a movie.” He also said the attic material needed to feel harsher on screen to make the audience sufficiently bloodthirsty. That is Feig’s explanation of the filmmaking choice, not a claim that all viewers will prefer the change.

What stays recognizable
Despite the changes to Nina’s backstory, Enzo, and the climax, the adaptation keeps the central reversal and the closing-job setup. Millie’s interview for another housemaid position suggests that the cycle of entering a troubled household may continue, even though the film reaches that point through a substantially altered confrontation.
