Yes: Alex Rose finds love with Brad Ackerman, her family’s lawyer. She realizes he meets all four parts of her mother Elizabeth’s test for true love, then makes a dramatic trip to Brad’s home. The ending also resolves Alex’s inheritance and shows her rebuilding her connection with family and friends.
Who does Alex end up with?
Alex ends up with Brad, not Finn. The film gradually develops their connection, and Alex recognizes that Brad answers the four questions Elizabeth left her as a test of true love:
- Is he kind?
- Can Alex tell him everything in her heart?
- Does he help her become the best version of herself?
- Can she imagine him as the father of her children?
Near the end, Alex drives her mother’s car to Brad’s home in a grand romantic gesture and crashes into him. The collision turns into their long-awaited moment together. Netflix’s March 31, 2025 ending explainer presents their romance as a connection built across the film, rather than a sudden change of heart.
Does Alex complete the life list and get the house?
Yes. Elizabeth made Alex’s inheritance conditional on completing the goals she had written down at age 13, with a deadline at the new year. Alex worries that falling in love may be the one item she cannot complete, but she finishes the list. In the final DVD and red envelope, Elizabeth gives Alex the promised inheritance: the Rose family home.

Why does the final New Year’s Eve scene matter?
The film returns to the Rose family living room where it began. This time, Alex is hosting a crowded New Year’s Eve gathering with friends and family. The change from her isolated opening reflects how she has begun to re-engage with her relationships and the life she had been drifting away from.
The gathering also gives the inheritance emotional meaning beyond owning a house: Alex is once again making the family home a place for people to come together. Elizabeth’s death still shapes the ending, but it does not leave Alex alone in the life she is building.

What happens with Alex’s biological father?
One list goal takes Alex to Vermont to meet her biological father, a musician. He says he wrote a song about her, but the connection disappoints her: he fails to meet her for breakfast the next morning. The trip nevertheless helps Alex reconnect with the father who raised her, from whom she had grown distant after her parents’ divorce. That renewed bond helps explain why the final family gathering feels like a resolution, not just a celebratory party.
What does the ending say about grief and the list?
The film treats Elizabeth’s list less as a checklist for its own sake than as a way to prompt Alex to reconsider what matters to her. Connie Britton told Netflix Tudum that the entries are guidelines that wake Alex up to her priorities, while writer-director Adam Brooks described the story as one about growing up and finding love alongside grief and loss.

Brooks told Netflix Tudum: “The sadness and confusion that Alex feels ultimately give way to something hopeful and life-affirming. It’s a reminder that when you lose people, they remain alive within you.” In that light, Alex’s new life does not undo her loss; it carries Elizabeth’s influence forward. The DVD scene makes this especially clear: Elizabeth’s final message helps Alex move, but the choices that follow belong to Alex.

The Netflix film adapts Lori Nelson Spielman’s novel, but the lead character and romantic resolution differ. Alex and Brad are the film’s pairing; Brett and Garrett are the novel’s. The novel’s ending should not be mistaken for the film’s.

In the Penguin Random House reader’s guide, Spielman says of the novel’s ending: “I had always planned that she would find her love in the end, but suddenly it occurred to me that it might not be necessary.” She says she considered leaving Brett single and fulfilled before deciding Brett should end up with Garrett. That is the author discussing the novel, not Alex’s story in the film.
