Spoilers for The Intern: Yes. Jules Ostin decides to stay on as CEO rather than hand her company to the outside candidate she has interviewed. In the final scene, she finds Ben and joins him for tai chi. The film closes on her choice to keep leading and on the friendship that has helped her find perspective; it does not spell out a long-term plan for balancing work and family.
Why Jules considers stepping aside
Jules is the founder and CEO of a fast-growing online fashion business, and Ben is a 70-year-old widower who joins the company as a senior intern. Their unlikely friendship sits at the center of the film. As the business expands, Jules faces pressure to bring in an experienced executive while coping with strain in her family life. She travels to San Francisco to meet an outside CEO candidate, making the question of whether to give up the role concrete.
The interview is not proof that Jules is incapable of leading. It shows her trying to respond to competing demands, and the film ultimately does not frame the answer as a simple choice between her family and her company. In a 2015 Los Angeles Times interview, writer-director Nancy Meyers described Jules as a founder and CEO and connected the film to her continuing interest in working women. Meyers also called The Intern and Baby Boom “a little bit like companion pieces.”
What Jules decides
Jules chooses to remain CEO instead of appointing the candidate she has interviewed. Her decision resolves the immediate question raised by the recruitment storyline: she will continue leading the business. The film does not provide the details of how she will manage every pressure around work and family, so it is more accurate to read the ending as a decision to keep leading than as a complete solution to those pressures.

Ben’s support gives Jules experience and perspective without taking the decision out of her hands. One reasonable interpretation is that their friendship helps her see that she does not have to abandon her own leadership identity to respond to the strains in her life. That is an interpretation of the story, not a stated business or childcare plan.
Why the final tai chi scene matters
After her decision, Jules finds Ben and joins his tai chi practice. The quiet gesture shifts the ending back from the CEO search to the bond between them: Ben has offered steady support, and Jules chooses to keep that friendship close. It is a warm emotional resolution, not a romantic pairing, a second appointment for Ben, or a sign that he will run the company.

Meyers explained the idea behind Ben’s role in a 2015 TIME interview, saying: “I wish as a young woman I had had someone who was not my shrink, not my parent, but a wonderful person watching my back.” That supportive older-friend dynamic helps explain why the final scene feels like a meaningful continuation of the story, rather than a separate answer to Jules’s business dilemma.
