Joan Vassos chose Chock Chapple over Guy Gansert, accepted Chock’s proposal in Bora Bora, and ended The Golden Bachelorette engaged. The finale was not a wedding: Joan and Chock became engaged during the finale, then confirmed the news during the live After the Final Rose special.
Joan starts the finale unsure she can be loved
The finale begins in the aftermath of Pascal Igbin’s departure. His exit leaves Joan emotionally shaken and questioning whether she is truly lovable or ready to continue looking for a partner.

Her friend Nancy helps steady her. Rather than pushing Joan toward one particular man, Nancy encourages her to stay open and trust what she feels. Joan is then left to make her final decision between Chock Chapple and Guy Gansert.
Chock meets Joan’s family
Before Joan makes her choice, Chock meets her children. The meeting gives him a chance to show that he understands Joan is not beginning her life from scratch. She is a widow with an established family, and any serious relationship would have to fit into that reality.
Chock tells Joan’s family that he is not trying to replace their late father. His goal, he explains, is to love Joan and help build a new chapter with her. Joan is visibly moved. She says she has not heard those words since the death of her husband, John. Even so, she does not immediately say them back. Joan explains that she wants to wait until the end of the journey before making that declaration, rather than responding simply because Chock has said it first.
Joan breaks up with Guy before he meets her family
Guy is preparing to meet Joan’s family when Joan realizes that she cannot continue the process as if the two relationships are still equal. After her date with Chock, she knows where her heart is.
Joan visits Guy and tells him that her heart belongs to someone else. Guy says he has fallen in love with her and had been prepared to talk about marriage. That makes the conversation particularly painful: he is not being eliminated after a family meeting or a final date, but just before taking the next step.

Joan tells Guy that she loves him in a different way. She also makes clear that she does not want to prolong the process and put him through another emotional stage when she has already made her decision. The breakup is abrupt, but it reflects Joan’s attempt to be honest rather than allow Guy to continue investing in a relationship she no longer believes can become her final one.
Chock proposes in Bora Bora
At the final rose ceremony in Bora Bora, Chock speaks about the people both of them have lost. He wants to honor Joan’s late husband, John, as well as his own late fiancée, Kathy.

The proposal is therefore framed as a beginning rather than an erasure. Joan and Chock are not pretending that their previous marriages and engagements did not shape them. Instead, they are acknowledging those relationships while choosing to build a new one together.
