NYT Connections #1021 answers for March 28
Yellow: STEP ONTO, AS A VEHICLE
- BOARD
- EMBARK
- ENTER
- MOUNT
All four words can describe getting onto or into a vehicle. Board is the most familiar usage, as in boarding a train, plane, bus, or ship. Embark commonly means to begin a journey, especially by getting onto a ship or other vehicle. Enter works in the broader sense of going into a vehicle, while mount can mean getting onto something, including a vehicle or animal.
Green: QUANTITIES IN MECHANICS
- ACCELERATION
- FORCE
- MASS
- MOMENTUM
These are standard quantities or concepts in mechanics. Acceleration describes a change in velocity, force is an interaction that can change an object’s motion, mass measures an object’s inertia, and momentum depends on mass and velocity.
Rank #3
The group is not asking for four equations or four units of measurement. It is a broader physics grouping, which can make the set easier to miss if you are looking for words with the same grammatical form.
Blue: TEXTBOOK IMAGES
- FIGURE
- ILLUSTRATION
- PICTURE
- PLATE
Textbooks use figures, illustrations, and pictures to explain or display information. A plate is the more specialized entry: in publishing, it can refer to a page or section containing an illustration, often printed separately from the main text. That less everyday meaning is the likely trap in this group.
Some of these words may also seem capable of fitting other visual or artistic categories. In Connections, the intended meaning is determined by the cleanest four-word set, not by every possible dictionary association.
Rank #4
Purple: _____ PLANT
- FACE — face plant
- PITCHER — pitcher plant
- POWER — power plant
- ROBERT — Robert Plant
The shared word is plant. Face plant means falling forward and hitting the ground face-first. A pitcher plant is a carnivorous plant, and a power plant is a facility that generates electricity.
ROBERT is the unusual entry. It produces Robert Plant, the English singer and songwriter best known as the lead vocalist of Led Zeppelin. The fourth group therefore combines three phrases with the name of a person, rather than consisting entirely of plant varieties or ordinary compounds.
Why this puzzle was difficult
The mechanics group is relatively precise once recognized, but the yellow and blue groups use ordinary words with several plausible meanings. Enter, mount, and board can all suggest movement onto or into something, while figure, illustration, picture, and plate overlap as descriptions of images.

The biggest surprise is the purple group. Three entries form familiar expressions with plant, but ROBERT only makes sense after recognizing the proper name Robert Plant. One published solver rated this puzzle “Hard” and reported making two mistakes, consistent with those overlapping visual terms and the proper-name twist.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to solve this grid
- Look for the technical quartet first. Acceleration, force, mass, and momentum belong together more narrowly than most of the other words.
- Separate image words from broader action words. Figure, illustration, picture, and plate form a strong textbook-related set.
- Test short phrases, not just literal categories. Face plant, pitcher plant, and power plant should prompt a search for a fourth word that works with “plant.”
- Allow for a proper name. Once FACE, PITCHER, and POWER are suspected, ROBERT completes the purple group through Robert Plant.
- Use the remaining words to confirm the vehicle group. BOARD, EMBARK, ENTER, and MOUNT are the four words left, and each can describe getting onto or into a vehicle.
