On Christmas Eve 2025, President Donald Trump called Stephen Colbert a “dead man walking” and said CBS should “put him to sleep.” In context, Trump was urging CBS to end The Late Show—a program the network had already canceled, with its end then scheduled for May 2026.
What Trump said about Stephen Colbert
In a Truth Social post reproduced by contemporaneous news reports, Trump wrote: “Stephen is running on hatred and fumes ~ A dead man walking! CBS should, ‘put him to sleep,’ NOW, it is the humanitarian thing to do!” Mediaite also reported that Trump called Colbert a “pathetic trainwreck.”
The phrase “put him to sleep” referred to ending Colbert’s television show, not to a separate action against Colbert personally. Trump’s post also attacked the program’s ratings, but the reports do not supply a named ratings figure that verifies his claims.
Why the remark came after CBS had canceled the show
CBS announced in July 2025 that The Late Show would be canceled. When reports covered Trump’s post in December, the program was still scheduled to end in May 2026. That was the announced schedule at the time, not confirmation of the date the final episode ultimately aired. The South China Morning Post, republishing an Agence France-Presse report, also described the May 2026 schedule.

When Trump posted and what else he criticized
Mediaite dated its report to December 24, 2025, and said Trump’s broadcast-license post appeared at 12:36 a.m. The posts went beyond Colbert: Trump criticized CBS, ABC and NBC, and questioned whether broadcast licenses should be terminated for networks whose news and late-night programs he viewed as “almost 100% Negative” toward him and his political allies. Salon reported that he raised the license question during the early hours of Christmas Eve.
A December 26 clip from The Young Turks said Colbert was not broadcasting live when Trump reacted and that the episode in question was a rerun. That detail is the clip’s account, rather than an independently established fact in the other reports.
