ABC named former NFL player and lawyer Mel Owens the lead of The Golden Bachelor Season 2 on April 22, 2025. The season premiered that September and is now complete: Owens gave his final rose to Peg Munson and offered her a commitment ring, not a marriage proposal.
Who is Mel Owens?
ABC described Owens as a 66-year-old Detroit native who graduated from the University of Michigan and was selected ninth overall by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1981 NFL Draft. After his football career, he moved to Orange County, California, and pursued a law career representing clients in sports-related injury matters. ABC’s cast biography also says he has two sons. These details are from the network’s announcement and biography. ABC’s announcement named Owens as the show’s second lead, following its first season.

When did Season 2 air?
ABC scheduled the premiere for September 24, 2025, from 8 to 10 p.m. EDT. The network announced that episodes would be available on Hulu the day after their ABC broadcast; that was the stated arrangement for the season, not a guarantee of present-day catalog availability. ABC’s premiere announcement listed 23 contestants, ages 58 to 77, and described the opening episode’s dates and rose ceremony.
Who did Mel Owens choose?
In the finale, which aired in November 2025, Owens chose Peg Munson over Cindy Cullers. ABC News reported that Munson accepted a commitment ring, rather than an engagement ring. Owens explained: “I have a ring and this represents our commitment to love to give us time to figure out together what our future holds.” The finale recap is available from ABC News.

Why ABC chose Owens
ABC’s April 2025 announcement framed Owens’s casting as the next installment of a series whose first season drew a large multi-platform audience. The network reported that Season 1 averaged 10.4 million viewers across platforms over its first 35 days, counting people age 2 and older. ABC characterized that as the strongest average for an ABC unscripted season since The Bachelor in the 2019–2020 season; it also reported a 2.88 rating among adults 18–49. These are figures published by ABC, not independently verified measurements here.
Owens said he consulted friends before agreeing to join the show: “When I found out that I could be the Golden Bachelor, I asked my friends, ‘What do you think?’ And everybody said, ‘Yes.’ And so I dove in,” he told ABC News, as quoted in its November 2025 report.
