She has also rejected distance and Turner’s illness as causes of their divorce. Their public explanations have changed over time, and the couple’s accounts do not establish one definitive reason for the split.
What Nist said when the divorce was announced
Turner and Nist met on the first season of The Golden Bachelor, became engaged in the 2023 finale and married in a televised ceremony in January 2024. They announced their divorce in a joint Good Morning America interview on April 12, 2024. Turner described the decision as the result of heart-to-heart conversations and consideration of their circumstances and living arrangements. “I think we just feel like it’s best for the happiness of each of us to live apart,” he said. Nist said they had looked at homes in South Carolina and considered New Jersey, but had not settled on where to live. ABC News reported on the joint interview.

Nist’s April 2024 response
Three days after the announcement, Nist posted on Instagram that she had truly thought the marriage would last forever. She thanked people who had supported her and said she was taking positive memories and friendships from the experience. Addressing people who were confused or angry, she asked them to “try a little kindness.” She also wrote, “It turns out, even at the age of 70, you don’t know everything.” ABC News quoted and summarized her post.
What Nist said in 2025 about the wedding and the breakup
In an April 2025 interview with Us Weekly, Nist said the couple made the wedding decision quickly because they were working under a deadline. Looking back, she said, they probably should have waited. She emphasized that her feelings at the time were real and that she believed the marriage would last. Nist also said distance was not the reason for the divorce and that Turner’s illness was not the reason. Us Weekly reported her retrospective comments.

How their statements about Turner’s illness differ
Nist returned to the subject in a 2025 interview on the Almost Famous podcast. In its account of the interview, AARP reported that Nist said she had known about Turner’s cancer diagnosis and would not have left him because of an illness. AARP also recalled Turner’s earlier statement that the diagnosis had a major bearing on his own decisions and, he thought, probably Nist’s. Those are separate personal accounts: Nist denied illness was her reason, while Turner described how the diagnosis affected his thinking. They do not settle a single cause for the divorce. AARP’s June 2025 report recounts both statements.
Turner’s memoir and Nist’s response
In November 2025, Vanity Fair reported on Turner’s memoir, Golden Years: What I’ve Learned from Love, Loss, and Reality, and his account of the relationship. Nist disputed his descriptions, telling the magazine, “It is fiction.” The memoir presents Turner’s perspective; Nist’s rejection presents hers. Without independent corroboration, neither should be treated as a verified account of disputed events. Vanity Fair reported on the memoir and Nist’s response.

What the public record does—and does not—explain
The public timeline shows an initial joint explanation centered on living arrangements and each person’s happiness, followed by Nist’s reflections that the wedding was rushed and that neither distance nor Turner’s illness caused the divorce. Turner later described the diagnosis as influential in his own decision-making, and his memoir led to a dispute over how he characterized the relationship. These statements document how each person has described the marriage at different points; they do not establish an objective, agreed-upon cause.
