Critics have singled out the cast’s chemistry and the film’s design, while the Associated Press praised its earnest take on family and heroism but stopped short of an unqualified rave. Here’s what the film is, how critics have responded, and what is established about watching it.
What is The Fantastic Four: First Steps about?
Marvel’s official synopsis places the story in a 1960s-inspired retro-futuristic world. Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm must defend Earth from Galactus and his Herald, Silver Surfer, while trying to hold together their family bond. Matt Shakman directed the film.

That premise sets up two scales of conflict: the cosmic danger posed by the villains and the personal challenge of remaining a family under pressure. The film’s critical reception suggests that the pairing—not the threat alone—is central to its identity.
Does the film’s style and ensemble work?
A specific retro-futurist look
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus points to the appealingly retro 1960s design as one of the film’s strengths. The Associated Press also praised its modernist look, comparing its visual flavor to The Jetsons. Those descriptions suggest a world with a deliberately period-inflected identity rather than a generic contemporary superhero setting.
#1 Best Overall
- Set against the backdrop of a ?60s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel?s First Family faces a daunting challenge. Forced to balance being heroes with their family bond, they must defend Earth from a space god and his enigmatic herald.
Chemistry and family dynamics
The Rotten Tomatoes consensus also highlights the cast’s chemistry. AP described the film as an “endearingly earnest superhero drama about family and heroism.” Together, those assessments point to an ensemble whose relationships are meant to carry as much weight as the action. AP’s three-out-of-four-star rating, however, is a qualified endorsement, not a claim that every element lands equally well.
The villains and the scale of the threat
AP’s review headline says the villains steal the show, drawing attention to Galactus and Silver Surfer as major attractions. The available critical descriptions support the film’s cosmic stakes and its visual identity, but do not establish that every action sequence succeeds or that the threat is more satisfying than the family story. Readers looking for a spoiler-light guide should treat the villains as a prominent part of the appeal, not assume a particular verdict on every set piece.
Who plays the Fantastic Four?
The Disney+ UK listing names the principal cast:
- Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards
- Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm
- Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm
- Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm
- Julia Garner
- Ralph Ineson
The listing identifies the actors but does not specify character names for Garner and Ineson in the cast details cited here.
What did critics say, and how did it open?
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus reads: “Benefitting from rock-solid cast chemistry and clad in appealingly retro 1960s design, this crack at The Fantastic Four does Marvel’s First Family justice.” This is an aggregator’s summary of critics’ views, not a statement from an individual reviewer.

Marvel and Disney list July 25, 2025, as the U.S. theatrical release date. Disney+ has an official UK listing for the film, but that does not establish availability in other countries; check the catalog in your own territory.
The Disney+ UK page lists a runtime of 1 hour 56 minutes and a 12+ label. AP’s U.S. review gives a runtime of 115 minutes and a PG-13 rating. These are source- and territory-specific listings, so the slight runtime difference should not be silently treated as a single universal figure.
