The Crossing is a 2018 ABC science-fiction drama that turns a refugee arrival into a serialized mystery: the newcomers say they have fled a war in America’s future. Its pilot is polished and watchable, with a premise that brings asylum claims into conflict with security fears. But the show’s sci-fi machinery can also keep its contemporary refugee allegory at a distance. The class divide suggested by the original headline is worth considering, though the pilot evidence available here does not establish class as the series’ dominant theme.
What is The Crossing about?
ABC’s hour-long drama debuted on April 2, 2018, and concluded on June 9, 2018. It follows a group of people who arrive in an Oregon fishing town claiming to be refugees from a war that has not yet happened in the present. D23 describes the series as a story of future Americans seeking refuge in the present day: D23’s series overview.
The pilot establishes the scale of the mystery through a fictional catastrophe: hundreds of bodies wash ashore near the village, and 47 people survive. Sheriff Jude Ellis is drawn into the response. Those numbers describe events in the show, not real-world migration figures. The question driving the premise is simple and effective: if the survivors are telling the truth, where—and when—have they come from?
How does the refugee story work as science fiction?
The future setting gives the series room to turn a recognizable humanitarian question into speculative suspense. Co-creator Dan Dworkin said a photograph of a Syrian father who crossed to Greece with his son helped spark the idea. He and co-creator Jay Beattie chose to put a speculative spin on a refugee story rather than write a straight, headline-driven drama. As Dworkin put it, “We don’t normally write straight ahead, ripped-from-the-headlines dramas, we usually like to put a little spin on it.” That origin is recounted in Stacy Jenel Smith’s Creators Syndicate interview.

The creators place the future in 2187 and build the series’ speculative world around the Apex, a powerful group in that future. In a TV Guide interview, Beattie and Dworkin described consulting futurists and technical experts while developing that world. Such consultations explain part of the creative process; they do not, by themselves, establish that the imagined future is a scientifically reliable prediction.
Does the pilot make its refugee allegory persuasive?
The pilot gives the conflict a clear moral and institutional shape. One fictional character insists, “Everyone has rights here, no matter where they’re from.” An asylum seeker answers with a plea for recognition: “All we want is a better life, same as your parents wanted for you.” Robert Lloyd’s April 2, 2018 Los Angeles Times review quotes both lines while describing the pilot’s confrontation between refuge and suspicion.

That tension is the show’s strongest thematic starting point: people who say they need protection are also treated as a security problem, and officials must decide what to believe about an arrival that seems impossible. Science fiction makes the question more than a direct dramatization of current asylum debates, but it also risks making the displaced people’s immediate needs secondary to the puzzle of their origin. The central review question is whether the mystery deepens the human story or mostly supplies a hook.
What does the show say about class?
The title’s class-divide framing invites attention to who has power, who is believed, and who bears the consequences when institutions respond to a crisis. In the pilot, the arriving group, local residents, and officials occupy unequal positions in the unfolding emergency. That is a useful lens for watching the series, but the available pilot-focused evidence does not support calling class its dominant theme or making a detailed claim about how the full season develops it.

A stronger class reading would need to follow those relationships across episodes: whether resources and authority shape whose interests prevail, how the town’s residents are affected, and whether the future’s social order is more than background for the mystery. Without that episode-level grounding, “class divide” is best treated as a question the premise raises, not a settled verdict on the show.
How does The Crossing hold up as a television drama?
Lloyd called the pilot “watchable, even diverting television,” praised its assembly and casting, and singled out star Steve Zahn with the phrase “definitely good Zahn.” He also saw familiar territory in its serialized science-fiction setup and asked whether it would have anything substantial to say about contemporary refugee crises. That is one critic’s response to the pilot, not a consensus about the series.

For viewers, the key trade-off is between an accessible genre engine and a social premise that could use more sustained attention. The arrival and time-travel mystery provide forward momentum; the pilot’s rights-versus-security debate gives that momentum a human stake. Whether the speculative plot ultimately makes the refugee story more complex or sidelines it is the question to carry into the rest of the season.
