His family said he died from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the group’s official biography confirms.
What happened to Joe Bonsall?
Bonsall died on July 9, 2024. The Oak Ridge Boys’ official biography gives his dates as May 18, 1948–July 9, 2024, and identifies ALS complications as the cause of death. ABC News and the Los Angeles Times also reported his death at 76 and the family’s stated cause.
When did Joe Bonsall announce his retirement?
On January 3, 2024, Bonsall said he was retiring from touring with the group’s ongoing farewell tour. In a statement reproduced by ABC News, he described a “slow onset (over 4 years now) of a neuromuscular disorder” and said walking had become impossible. He added, “It has just gotten too difficult.”
That January statement did not name ALS. The “over 4 years” refers to Bonsall’s own description of how long he had been dealing with the disorder; it is not an independently established diagnosis date. The official biography later identified ALS in its account of his death.

How long did Joe Bonsall perform with the Oak Ridge Boys?
Bonsall joined the Oak Ridge Boys in 1973 and sang with the group for more than 50 years. The Los Angeles Times’ 2024 obituary described his tenure as more than five decades. The group’s biography also notes that he became its principal onstage spokesman during that period.
What did Joe Bonsall do beyond performing?
Bonsall wrote books as well as performing. His memoir, I See Myself, was released in November 2024, according to the Oak Ridge Boys’ official biography. In its tribute, reproduced by ABC News, his family remembered his love of singing, reading, writing, playing banjo, working on the farm and the Philadelphia Phillies, adding that “Jesus and his family always came first.”
