The Drama turns an engaged couple’s wedding week into a pressure cooker, with Zendaya and Robert Pattinson supplying the attraction, suspicion and unease that keep it moving. Kristoffer Borgli’s film is provocative and often funny in a way that makes the laughter feel uneasy. Whether its sharp shifts add up to a satisfying romance or merely a deliberately uncomfortable provocation is a harder question.
What is The Drama about?
A couple preparing to marry find their relationship thrown off course by an unexpected confession. The story follows the fallout as their wedding week grows increasingly fraught. That premise is best approached with as little foreknowledge as possible: the film’s tension depends on watching the revelation alter how the couple sees one another.
The Drama is a 2026 A24 film written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. A24’s official trailer gives its release date as April 3. A24’s film page and official trailer provide the studio’s details; Prime Video describes the setup as an explosive confession, while Rotten Tomatoes’ synopsis also stresses the unexpected turn.
Are Zendaya and Robert Pattinson electric together?
Yes, in the sense that their performances make the couple’s changing emotional temperature the film’s most compelling feature. The relationship does not simply switch from bliss to conflict. Attraction and apprehension coexist, and the actors make the uncomfortable pauses and shifts in attention feel as consequential as the arguments. Their wedding-week scenes play less like a conventional lovers’ quarrel than like two people trying to work out whether intimacy can survive a new and unsettling understanding of each other.

That tension gives the film its charge. Zendaya and Pattinson can make embarrassment turn into suspicion, or fear sit just beneath a moment of tenderness, without flattening the couple into symbols in an argument. Their chemistry is not only romantic; it is the friction that keeps the story alive as the confession reshapes the relationship.
Is The Drama a rom-com?
It begins with the familiar shape of a wedding romance, then uses that setting to create discomfort rather than dependable romantic-comedy pleasures. The comedy is dark and often rooted in social unease: people must keep navigating the rituals and expectations around a wedding while the relationship at its center is in crisis. Calling it a rom-com captures the romantic setup, but not the experience of watching it.

The tonal pivots are a deliberate part of the film’s appeal and its risk. A laugh can arrive beside an emotionally serious moment, leaving the audience unsure whether to relax or brace for what comes next. When that collision works, it gives the film a distinctive, queasy energy. When it does not, the joke can feel like a way of provoking the audience rather than deepening the scene.
How well does the provocation work?
Borgli builds the film around disclosure and its consequences: not only what is said, but how people interpret it, respond to it and try to continue with the life they had planned. The wedding-week structure puts private doubts beside public expectations, so the couple’s crisis keeps colliding with the pressure to proceed as though everything is normal. That is a strong engine for an uneasy relationship story.

But a provocative premise does not guarantee a fully persuasive film. The critical response reflects that divide. The Guardian treats the film as an offensive provocation, while Variety describes it as a squirm comedy and criticizes the screenplay as only partly funny and insufficiently worked through. RogerEbert.com likewise frames it as a dark, absurdist story in which Emma’s revelation disrupts the couple’s romantic bliss. Those are individual critical judgments, not evidence of a single consensus. They point to the central question for viewers: does the film’s discomfort illuminate the relationship, or does the provocation become more memorable than its emotional payoff?
Should you watch The Drama?
Watch it for two leads who make attraction and distrust feel simultaneous, and for a romance that takes a sharply uncomfortable turn instead of settling into a reassuring wedding story. Go in expecting black comedy and emotional friction, not a straightforward meet-cute-to-marriage arc. If you want the premise to stay entirely spoiler-free, avoid plot-heavy discussion before viewing.

The story’s defining disclosure is Emma’s revelation, which reframes the couple’s romantic confidence and forces the wedding-week conflict into a moral as well as personal register. The useful question is not simply whether the revelation is shocking; it is whether the film makes the couple’s reactions feel credible and consequential. That choice is the dividing line between viewers who find the discomfort purposeful and those who see a provocation that the screenplay does not fully resolve.
What the box-office milestone does—and doesn’t—say
On May 1, 2026, the Associated Press reported that The Drama had recently become the fifth A24 release to clear $100 million at the box office. That is a milestone reported at that point in time, not a current gross or a verdict on the film’s quality. The Associated Press report supplies the dated figure.
