There is no single, officially published list that places every Halo game, novel, comic, short story and screen production in one exact sequence. The reliable way to follow Halo is to separate its two continuities, then use a practical order for the core games and selected books. The game-and-book universe is the main canon; the television series belongs to a separate Silver Timeline.
What “complete” means in Halo
This guide maps the major story eras and the most useful entry points. It is comprehensive at the franchise level, but it is not an item-by-item catalogue of every terminal, comic, short story, game mode and tie-in. Halo Waypoint’s official material treats the games and their licensed novels, comics and other fiction as one core continuity. The television adaptation branches into its own continuity, using familiar characters and events while allowing different outcomes.
“In order” can mean release order, fictional chronology or a newcomer-friendly route. Those are not the same: Halo: Reach was released after the original trilogy but is set immediately before Halo: Combat Evolved.
The major Halo eras
| Era or anchor | Fictional placement | Mediums and key works | How essential it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ancient Forerunner history | Long before the human-Covenant conflict; humans were brought to Zeta Halo, then called Gyre 11, roughly 100,000 years ago. | Primordium and other Forerunner-era fiction | Optional background for understanding the rings, the Forerunners and the wider mythology |
| Humanity’s first contact and the early Covenant War | The conflict’s opening period; Silent Storm occurs in the war’s first year. | Contact Harvest, Silent Storm, Oblivion | Expanded lore; especially useful for readers following Master Chief and Blue Team |
| Spartan program and the fall of Reach | Immediately before the first game | The Fall of Reach; Halo: Reach | Best prelude to the original campaign |
| The first Halo ring | The opening game-era crisis | Halo: Combat Evolved; The Flood | Main story essential; the novel expands the game’s events |
| From Installation 04 to Earth | Combat Evolved through the end of the original Covenant War arc | First Strike; Halo 2; Halo 3: ODST; Halo 3 | Main game storyline, with ODST overlapping Halo 2 |
| Postwar and Reclaimer-era conflicts | After Halo 3 | Kilo-Five novels; later Blue Team and Master Chief novels; Halo 4 | Essential for the modern arc, with novels adding political and military context |
| Created and Banished conflicts | After Halo 4 and Halo 5; leading into the Zeta Halo campaign | Halo 5: Guardians; Halo Wars 2; Shadows of Reach (October 2559); The Rubicon Protocol | Main modern setup and connected expanded fiction |
| Zeta Halo and the aftermath | Halo Infinite, followed by stories set in 2560 | Halo Infinite; Edge of Dawn | Current central game storyline; Edge of Dawn continues related threads |
| Silver Timeline | Parallel to, not inside, the game-and-book chronology | Halo television series | Separate adaptation continuity |
The core chronology, era by era
1. Before humanity’s modern war: Forerunners and Zeta Halo
Halo’s history begins far earlier than the Master Chief. Official Halo Waypoint material connects Primordium with Chakas’s journey across Zeta Halo, once known as Gyre 11, and describes humans being brought there approximately 100,000 years ago. That establishes an ancient-history anchor; it does not, by itself, provide a complete order for every Forerunner novel and story.

2. First contact and the opening Covenant War
Contact Harvest is the clearest novel entry point for humanity’s first contact with the Covenant and the conflict’s beginning. Silent Storm takes place in the war’s first year, while Oblivion continues the early-war Master Chief and Blue Team thread.
3. Reach and the Spartan prelude
The Fall of Reach introduces the Spartan program and leads into the first game. Halo: Reach is a game prequel set just before Combat Evolved. Read or play either before the first game if you want the immediate military and character context, but remember that the novel’s publication date and the game’s fictional date are different things.
4. Installation 04 and the original trilogy
Halo: Combat Evolved begins the iconic game journey. The Flood novel expands that same period, and First Strike bridges the events of Combat Evolved and Halo 2. These are dependable game-and-book anchors, not a claim that every side story fits neatly between their chapters.

5. Earth, the Covenant’s collapse and the overlap of ODST
The principal game sequence continues through Halo 2, Halo 3: ODST and Halo 3. ODST runs alongside events in Halo 2, so a strict event-by-event chronology would require switching between works. For a first playthrough, completing each campaign is clearer than repeatedly changing games.
6. The postwar Reclaimer era
The Kilo-Five books examine the unstable period immediately after Halo 3, including conflict involving former Covenant species and ONI. Other Master Chief and Blue Team novels connect the early war to later missions. Halo 4 begins the next major game arc.
7. The Created and Banished conflicts
Halo 5: Guardians and Halo Wars 2 precede Halo Infinite in the modern game storyline. Shadows of Reach is set in October 2559. The official guide places The Rubicon Protocol around the Banished occupation of Zeta Halo while the Master Chief is absent, giving context for the opening situation in Infinite.

8. After Halo Infinite
Edge of Dawn is set in 2560, immediately after the Infinite campaign, and follows story threads from The Rubicon Protocol. Halo Waypoint’s Waypoint Chronicles – Volume One collects more than thirty standalone short stories set in different times and places. It broadens the universe rather than forming one chronological sequence.
The best order for playing the games
For a newcomer who wants the fictional flow without constant timeline research, use this route:
- Halo: Reach
- Halo: Combat Evolved
- Halo 2
- Halo 3: ODST
- Halo 3
- Halo 4
- Halo 5: Guardians
- Halo Infinite
This is a simplified games-first route, not a claim that every event occurs in that uninterrupted order. ODST overlaps Halo 2, and numerous novels and short stories run between or alongside the campaigns. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is the practical way to access the central campaign sequence, including Reach, Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo 4.

Accessible route around the first game
- The Fall of Reach
- The Flood
- First Strike
This trio is the most approachable novel path: a Spartan and Reach prelude, an expanded version of the first game’s period, and a bridge to Halo 2.
Early-war Master Chief route
- Silent Storm
- Oblivion
Choose this route when you want Master Chief and Blue Team during the Covenant War’s opening year rather than a retelling of the original game era.
Expanded-universe route
Use the official Halo Book Guide’s groupings to follow a strand such as Kilo-Five, Blue Team, Rion Forge, Alpha-Nine or the novels connected to Halo Infinite. These groupings are useful by character and era, but they are not a substitute for an exhaustive chronology that places every individual publication.
Does the Halo TV show follow the game timeline?
No. The series belongs to the Silver Timeline, a parallel continuity. It uses established Halo characters, settings and ideas but can change their histories and relationships. Keep episodes out of the game-and-book order; treat the show as its own version of the universe.
How to avoid common timeline mistakes
- Decide whether you want release order, fictional chronology or a newcomer route before starting.
- Do not treat Halo: Reach’s later release as evidence that it follows the original trilogy in-universe.
- Mark overlapping works, especially Halo 3: ODST and Halo 2, instead of forcing them into a false single-file sequence.
- Keep Silver Timeline television events separate from core canon.
- Use specialist chronological bibliographies only as discovery aids, checking disputed placements against primary Halo sources.
Reference options for going deeper
Halo: The Master Chief Collection is the most convenient game package for the central campaigns. Halo: Waypoint Chronicles – Volume One is available in paperback, ebook and audiobook editions according to the official book guide and offers more than thirty standalone stories. The Halo Encyclopedia (2022) is a useful secondary reference, but its edition year matters: it should not be mistaken for a catalogue of every later publication.
