Lisa Kudrow returns for an eight-episode final season that turns the series’ show-business satire toward AI and a television industry in flux. Whether the curtain call feels satisfying depends on how much you value the show’s uneasy blend of cringe and compassion; its final-season status is official.
Is season 3 the last season of The Comeback?
Yes. HBO billed the third season as the series’ third and final season. It premiered in the United States on HBO and HBO Max on March 22, 2026, and its eight weekly episodes concluded with the series finale on May 10. HBO’s announcement set that schedule.
What is the final season about?
Valerie Cherish is once again navigating the machinery of television, now in an industry reshaped by new production realities and AI-written programming. Contemporary coverage identifies AI and the changing business of television as central satirical targets. The premise gives the show a fresh version of its familiar tension: Valerie wants to remain relevant, while the industry keeps changing the terms of what relevance means.
The season’s world also places Valerie in the orbit of a no-budget film and The Traitors, details noted in the Los Angeles Times review. Those references point to a comedy interested in how performers adapt to whatever format, platform, or opportunity is available—not simply to the old Hollywood ladder.

Lisa Kudrow’s performance and Valerie’s appeal
Kudrow’s work remains the center of the show’s design. Valerie’s confidence is never quite separate from her need for reassurance, and the comedy comes from watching her present determination as effortless even when the situation exposes how much is at stake. That combination lets the character be funny without reducing her to a punchline.
The final-season framing gives that performance a particular charge. Valerie has spent the series trying to secure a place in a business that can turn attention into both opportunity and humiliation. The new season’s industry and AI material makes that struggle current, while Kudrow’s performance keeps it personal: the question is not only what television will become, but how Valerie will keep being seen within it.

Does the AI satire work?
AI-written television offers The Comeback a natural target. The subject brings the show’s longstanding interest in authorship, performance, and control into a changed production landscape. TheWrap’s coverage of Kudrow and co-creator Michael Patrick King likewise identifies AI satire as a central concern of the season (TheWrap interview coverage).
The subject is most useful as comedy when it stays connected to people and their ambitions rather than functioning as a topical label. Here, the AI-era premise belongs to the same larger joke the series has always pursued: the entertainment industry repeatedly promises that a new system will make things more efficient, more modern, or more successful, while leaving performers to negotiate their own insecurity inside it.

Is season 3 worth watching?
For viewers who enjoy performance-driven comedy about ambition, self-invention, and the discomfort of watching someone try too hard, the final season offers a fitting return to The Comeback’s territory. Its focus on AI and television’s changing conditions gives Valerie a contemporary obstacle, while Kudrow’s performance preserves the show’s essential balance between embarrassment and sympathy. It is best approached as the conclusion to Valerie’s story, not as a standalone tour of the television business.
