In a December 2024 interview, she described what happened before her disqualification, the diagnosis she received after filming, and her account of the argument later dubbed “footsie-gate.”
What happened to Aviv Melmed Bruno’s foot?
Bruno told Entertainment Weekly that her foot trouble began as plantar fasciitis. While sprinting during the season, she felt a pop and said she could no longer walk or put pressure on her heel or foot. She said she tried to hide how serious it felt because she did not want to be pulled from the show, and that she received therapy and medication during filming. After the mini final, she said, she also got a cortisone shot.
After returning home, Bruno said, an orthopedic surgeon told her the fascia was completely torn. Recalling the conversation, she said: “When I came home, I went to an orthopedic surgeon, and he is like, ‘It’s completely torn, you don’t have anything there.’” She also reported a heel spur, wearing a boot for three weeks, and continuing physical therapy. At the time of the December 2024 interview, she said she had begun running again while gradually rebuilding her distance. Those are Bruno’s recollections and update from that interview, not an independently confirmed medical record or a statement about her current condition.
Why was Bruno disqualified in the tunnel challenge?
Bruno said she took a wrong turn and kept going before realizing she was lost. “I took a wrong turn and went a thousand miles in the wrong direction and ended up getting lost in the tunnels,” she told Entertainment Weekly. In a separate TV Insider exit interview, she called the mistake a “rookie mistake” and said she should have turned around rather than continue. She said pressure from an earlier penalty, her injured foot and moving too fast contributed to the error.

She described the tunnels as pitch black for contestants, who felt their way through with their hands. The night-vision footage shown to viewers, she said, revealed details she could not see while competing. Bruno recalled feeling something like a stick on the ground but said she did not see a visible barrier like the one shown in the episode. Her explanation does not establish whether a barrier was present or what production knew about it.
Did Bruno get to solve the finish-line puzzle?
No. Bruno said she reached the finish-line puzzle route but was not allowed to attempt the puzzle after the disqualification decision. She then faced Jenny West in a physical cage-match elimination, lost, and left the season. The interviews convey Bruno’s account of events; they do not provide an independent production explanation of the DQ ruling.

What did Bruno say about “footsie-gate”?
Bruno said Johnny Devenanzio tapped her injured foot before the filmed argument on the bus. She said Michele Fitzgerald had made a comment about people touching one another, and that cameras arrived after the argument had already begun. In Bruno’s account, the footage used showed her and Devenanzio mimicking the footsie gesture, while the initial tap was not captured. This is her description of the exchange and the edit.

Bruno described her return as coming after 18 years away from the show. In TV Insider’s exit interview, she also said the alliance later nicknamed Bananas’ Angels grew from separate friendships and working relationships, rather than from a single planned bond. Her return ended with the tunnel DQ and elimination loss to West in Battle of the Eras.
