After Joel’s death, Ellie leaves a grieving, rebuilding Jackson for Seattle, where the Washington Liberation Front members responsible for his killing are based. Dina goes with her, turning Ellie’s pursuit of justice into a journey shaped by their unresolved feelings—and the episode closes with viewers seeing a threat the two travelers have not yet noticed.
Jackson is still living with Joel’s death
The episode begins with Ellie recovering in hospital after Joel’s death and the infected attack on Jackson. Three months later, the town is trying to rebuild, but Ellie is already focused on leaving. She does not explain what Joel told her about saving her, keeping that part of her grief private.
Dina tells Ellie that Joel’s killers belong to the Washington Liberation Front, or WLF, and are based in Seattle. Ellie brings the idea of pursuing them to a town hall, framing the expedition as a response to what happened. The council rejects the plan. The disagreement leaves a tension at the heart of her decision: Ellie calls it justice, while those around her see how grief and revenge may be driving her.
Dina chooses to go with Ellie
After the council’s refusal, Ellie prepares to leave alone. Dina joins her, and Seth provides a horse and provisions for their quiet departure. Her choice changes the shape of the trip: it is not only a hunt for Joel’s killers but also a journey between two people trying to work out what they mean to each other.

On the road, they revisit their New Year’s Eve kiss, but each downplays its significance. The exchange leaves their feelings unresolved rather than offering a clear declaration. That uncertainty sits alongside Ellie’s determination, making their shared journey emotionally more complicated than a simple pursuit.
Dead Seraphites make the danger visible
Near Seattle, Ellie and Dina come across dead Seraphites, including a young girl. The sight unsettles Dina and signals that the violence surrounding the city is not limited to the WLF or to Ellie’s personal mission. The episode introduces the Seraphites as another faction in this dangerous landscape without shifting the focus away from the pair’s immediate journey.

The Seattle reveal gives viewers a wider view
Ellie and Dina enter Seattle believing the city appears to be empty of WLF members. Viewers, however, have been shown a WLF convoy with armored vehicles nearby. The gap between what the characters can see and what the audience knows supplies the episode’s closing tension: the pair may think they have arrived without drawing attention, while the audience understands that a substantial force is close.
