It is a dramatization, not a documentary: the production company, FLX, describes the series as fictional. Genealogical research is central to the story of how the investigation reached a breakthrough.
Is The Breakthrough based on a true story?
Yes, it draws on a real case: the 2004 double murder in Linköping, Sweden, and the eventual use of genealogical research in the investigation. But the series should be understood as a dramatization, not a documentary. FLX describes it as a fictional story and says it explores both the investigation and the effects an unsolved crime has on a community and the people left without answers. FLX’s production page also frames the story around an unexpected hero and an unlikely collaboration.
FLX says the case marked the first time in Europe that a murder could be solved through genealogical research. That is the production company’s characterization of the case, rather than a claim that the series itself is a documentary account.
How many episodes are in Season 1?
Season 1 has four episodes. The season listing gives January 7, 2025 as the release date for all four episodes. It describes an investigation that begins after the murders, continues through years without answers, and turns to a genealogist before reaching a breakthrough. The season page lists Swedish as the original language and Netflix as the network.

What book is the series based on?
The series is based on The Breakthrough: How the genealogist solved the double murder in Linköping by Anna Bodin and Peter Sjölund. The book is the nonfiction source for readers seeking background on the case and genealogical investigation. The series, by contrast, is explicitly presented by FLX as fictionalized drama; the available information does not establish specific scene-by-scene differences between the book and adaptation.
Who made The Breakthrough?
The Swedish production company FLX made the series for Netflix. Oskar Söderlund is credited as writer, Lisa Siwe as director, and Lejla Besic as producer. FLX reports that Genombrottet was nominated for Best TV-Drama at the 2025 Swedish Kristallen TV Awards.
