The Boys Season 4 makes a compelling case for stronger character drama, but a less subtle political satire. Its election-year story gives Butcher and Annie more consequential choices while pushing political parallels closer to the surface. Whether that makes the season better depends on what you value: emotional stakes and an escalating plot, or satire that trusts viewers to make the connection themselves.
What changed in Season 4?
The eight-episode season places its conflict between a fictional presidential election and the January 6 certification of the result. That brings government and political power nearer the center of the plot than in earlier seasons, where the satire more often took aim at superheroes, celebrity, and the business built around them. Le Monde critic Thomas Sotinel sees the show shifting toward the entanglement of spectacle, politics, and business.
The season premiered on June 13, 2024, with three episodes; five more arrived weekly through July 18. Rotten Tomatoes lists Prime Video as a subscription viewing option, though availability can vary by territory and over time.
Why the character drama can feel stronger
Butcher’s conflict has moral stakes
Sotinel highlights Butcher’s moral dilemma as one of the season’s central dramatic threads. The political crisis is not only a backdrop: it gives personal choices greater weight and makes the characters’ loyalties and compromises part of the season’s larger struggle.

Annie faces the cost of public life
Sotinel also points to Annie’s response to public life. Her arc helps connect the pressures of being visible and politically consequential to the season’s larger story, rather than leaving the political material as a series of detached references.
That added dramatic investment does not mean every plot turn lands. Reviewers differed on whether the season’s slower, more involved approach created room for character work or made the story feel unwieldy and less fresh. Empire’s Amon Warmann called it the show’s best season and said it was “at the top of its game”; TV Guide’s Lyvie Scott called it “the weakest so far.” These are competing critical judgments, not a settled verdict.

Why its political satire can feel weaker
The analogies are more explicit
Season 4’s political focus makes its targets easier to identify, but clarity can come at the cost of subtlety. Sotinel reads Homelander as echoing Donald Trump and Firecracker as resembling Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. Those are the critic’s interpretations, not official character equivalences. The shift can make the allegory immediately legible while leaving less distance between the superhero story and real-world political figures.
Intent does not guarantee sharpness
The creative team has confirmed that the political material was deliberate. In a December 5, 2024 interview, showrunner Eric Kripke said, “We live in a different world now, I’d argue, an even worse one. While we’re taking those same shots, we have different targets.” He described the comic as “a punk rock satire of the politics of that world.” Executive producer and writer David Reed said the team knew a federal election was coming and had discussed real-world events well before the writers’ room began developing the season.

That explains the choice to engage directly with contemporary politics; it does not settle whether the result is effective. Variety’s Alison Herman noted that government is more central to the story than before. Slashfilm’s Danielle Ryan, by contrast, called the politics “muddled at best” and “toothless.” Some reviewers found the allegory broad but effective; others found its targets or point less clear.
Does the season still work as comedy?
Yes, though its comic provocation sits alongside a bleaker tone. Reviewers praised humor and satirical set pieces, while also describing the season as unusually grim. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus called it “grim and even a little glum while holding up a cracked mirror towards modern society.” That is the critics’ consensus phrasing, not a statement from the show’s creators.

The tension matters: outrageous comedy can puncture political spectacle, but repeated bluntness can also make satire feel less like a joke with a point and more like a direct declaration. Viewers who want the show’s confrontational humor may find the set pieces effective; those looking for a fresher or more oblique critique may find the season too on the nose.

- Character drama: The season gives Butcher’s moral conflict and Annie’s public choices a prominent place in its story.
- Narrative momentum: The more involved political plot can build season-long stakes, but critics disagreed about whether its complexity slowed or tangled the story.
- Satirical subtlety: More direct political parallels make the targets easier to recognize, but that directness can blunt the pleasure of inference.
- Comic effect: Provocative humor remains, though it is paired with a notably bleak mood.
- Intent versus execution: The writers’ comments establish that contemporary politics informed the season; the finished episodes still have to earn their satire through clarity, timing, and comic force.
A 2024 ABC News (Australia) report recorded a 93 percent critics’ rating and a 52 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes amid allegations of review bombing and sharply opposed audience reactions. Those figures describe a dated snapshot, not the current ratings, and do not prove that all low audience scores were manipulated.
