Saturday Night Live’s “VP Debate 2024 Cold Open” turns the candidates’ cordial moments during the October 1, 2024, vice-presidential debate into an awkward “bromance” joke. Bowen Yang plays JD Vance and Jim Gaffigan plays Tim Walz, while Maya Rudolph’s Kamala Harris and Andy Samberg’s Doug Emhoff watch their apparent chemistry unfold.
What happens in the SNL cold open?
In the sketch, Harris and Emhoff watch Vance and Walz debate. The candidates’ occasional friendliness becomes the comic premise: Harris reacts to how comfortable the two men seem with each other, and the exchange is framed as an unexpected bromance. That is a joke about the debate’s onstage atmosphere, not evidence that Vance and Walz had a personal friendship.
The official SNL video, titled “VP Debate 2024 Cold Open – SNL,” was published October 5, 2024. Its description identifies the cast: Yang as Vance, Gaffigan as Walz, Rudolph as Harris, and Samberg as Emhoff.
Why did the sketch make their debate feel unusually friendly?
The real debate took place on October 1, 2024. The Associated Press described it as often orderly, policy-focused, and civil, a contrast to the more combative tone many viewers might expect from a televised campaign debate. Vance even closed with a courteous offer: if Walz became vice president, Vance said he would offer “my prayers,” “my best wishes,” and “my help whenever he wants it,” according to the CBS News transcript.

Those moments provide the material for the sketch’s exaggerated “Why are they vibing?” reaction. But the debate was not uniformly warm. During a tense exchange, moderator Margaret Brennan intervened: “Gentlemen, the audience can’t hear you because the mics are cut,” the AP reported. The joke works by amplifying a real contrast—courtesy amid disagreement—not by suggesting the candidates agreed on everything.

What the “bromance” framing means
Contemporary coverage described the cold open as a parody of Vance and Walz’s friendly-seeming debate moments, filtered through Harris and Emhoff’s reactions. The Daily Beast’s October 2024 account likewise identifies the “bromance” as the sketch’s comic framing. It is best understood as satire of the candidates’ public interaction, rather than a claim about their private relationship.
