The “Ghibli-style” AI-art wave was a real social-media phenomenon, but its biggest surge happened in March 2025, after improved image generation arrived in ChatGPT. People transformed portraits, memes, travel photos and news images into soft, hand-painted animated scenes. It was not an official Studio Ghibli filter or product.
You can create a similar mood today by describing visual qualities—delicate linework, watercolor-and-gouache texture, warm natural light and atmospheric backgrounds—rather than asking a generator to copy a studio, artist, film or character. The result should be treated as unofficial AI-generated art, with separate questions about consent, commercial use and copyright.

What actually happened in 2025?
OpenAI’s upgraded image-generation feature triggered a rapid wave of transformed images in March 2025. Social posts showed selfies, family photographs, memes and famous pictures reimagined as colorful animated illustrations. Coverage from TechCrunch and The Washington Post documented the moment.
The look spread because several cues are immediately recognizable: rounded expressive faces, warm or pastoral color palettes, painterly scenery, soft light, gentle fantasy and cinematic framing. Those qualities describe a broad animated-film aesthetic; Studio Ghibli’s films themselves do not all share one identical visual treatment.

As of 2026, “taking over social media” is a description of that 2025 viral moment, not a measured claim that the trend currently dominates every platform. There is also no indication that Studio Ghibli launched or endorsed an official consumer “Ghibli AI filter.” “Ghibli AI generator” is usually a search phrase or third-party marketing label.
How to create an animated-film portrait in ChatGPT
Labels and limits can change, but the durable workflow is:
- Open ChatGPT and sign in. OpenAI currently lists image generation with limits on the Free plan and expanded access on Plus, listed at $20 per month on its consumer pricing page. Availability and caps vary by account and can change.
- Upload an image you may legally use. Choose a clear, well-lit photo with one main subject and visible facial features.
- Describe the transformation. Preserve the subject’s pose, approximate features, clothing and composition, then specify the environment, lighting, palette and crop.
- Inspect the first result. Check the face, hands, text, logos, background and any private details.
- Revise one problem at a time. Targeted edits usually work better than repeatedly regenerating an overloaded prompt.
- Export and disclose. Label the post “AI-generated” or “AI-assisted” when transparency matters.

A safer starting prompt
Transform this uploaded photo into an original, whimsical hand-painted animated-film illustration. Keep the person’s pose, approximate facial features, hairstyle, clothing and composition recognizable. Use delicate ink lines, watercolor-and-gouache textures, warm natural lighting, expressive but natural eyes, softly detailed foliage, atmospheric depth and a nostalgic fantasy-adventure mood. Do not add text, logos, branded products, copyrighted characters or extra people.

This approach asks for attributes rather than an exact imitation. A useful formula is:
Action + subject preservation + visual qualities + environment + lighting + composition + exclusions.
For example: “Reimagine this portrait as an original hand-painted animated fantasy illustration. Preserve the expression, jacket and three-quarter pose. Add a quiet countryside, varied greens and blues, soft late-afternoon light, layered watercolor texture and a vertical 4:5 composition. No text, logos, film characters or additional people.”

Revision prompts that solve common defects
- “Keep the face and hairstyle closer to the source photo.”
- “Remove the extra fingers and simplify the hands.”
- “Preserve the original clothing colors and make skin tones natural.”
- “Remove all text and brand logos.”
- “Use a cooler evening palette rather than a yellow filter.”
- “Make the background more detailed but keep the subject prominent.”
- “Make the result feel inspired by hand-painted Japanese animation without copying a specific film, character or artist.”
Choose the source image carefully
Use a sharp, moderately high-resolution photograph with uncluttered surroundings. Avoid uploading confidential documents, addresses, license plates, medical information or workplace data. Obtain permission before transforming another person’s portrait, and take extra care with children’s images. Crop private locations and identifying details before upload.

Do not use the workflow to fabricate evidence, impersonate someone or create misleading political or news imagery. A generated likeness can be persuasive even when it is obviously imperfect.
Fixing failures

Compare free access, photo-editing support, consistency, text rendering, privacy controls, commercial terms, provenance signals, editing controls, platform access and cost predictability—not just how attractive one sample looks.
Is “Ghibli-style” AI art legal?
There is no single yes-or-no answer. Copyright generally protects particular creative expression, not an abstract style by itself. That does not make every imitation safe. A result may still raise copyright, trademark, publicity, privacy, unfair-competition or platform-policy issues if it reproduces a protected character, film still, recognizable composition, logo or artwork.

Hayao Miyazaki has criticized AI-generated animation in footage from a 2016 documentary. That is not the same as a verified new statement specifically about the 2025 social-media trend; avoid presenting it as one.
Commercial use checklist
- Do not sell images containing Studio Ghibli characters, film scenes, logos or other recognizable franchise assets without appropriate rights.
- Do not imply endorsement by Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki or a distributor.
- Check the generator’s current terms and the law in your target market.
- Confirm that you own or have permission to use the input photograph.
- For client work, agree in writing on AI use and disclosure.
- Keep the original photo, prompts, edits and evidence of substantial human contributions.
OpenAI says it does not claim copyright over content generated through its API for the user or end user, but that contractual position does not decide whether a particular output qualifies for copyright protection under local law. Permission under a service’s terms, copyrightability and rights in the input image are separate questions.

OpenAI reports that images generated with ChatGPT, Codex and its API include C2PA metadata and SynthID signals, and provides a verification tool for supported provenance. Metadata can disappear through screenshots, re-exports or social platforms; its absence does not prove human authorship. These systems are provenance signals, not universal AI detectors.

The viral wave belongs to March 2025, but the workflow remains easy in 2026. The most reliable and responsible prompt does not say “copy Ghibli.” It specifies hand-painted texture, expressive but natural faces, atmospheric scenery, restrained lighting and an original composition—then checks consent, privacy, defects, provenance and commercial rights before publication.

No. A platform’s permission to use an output is different from whether local law grants copyright protection. Human selection, editing and substantial modification may matter.
