CBS postponed its scheduled U.S. broadcast of Inside CECOT on Dec. 21, 2025, and a cut subsequently appeared on a Canadian streaming platform and circulated online. CBS broadcast the report in the United States on Jan. 18, 2026, largely unchanged. The delay and online spread are established; the title’s words “censored” and “internet contraband” are interpretations, not proof of a private motive or ongoing suppression.
What happened to the 60 Minutes CECOT report?
Inside CECOT, reported by Sharyn Alfonsi and produced by Oriana Zill de Granados, examined the U.S. deportation of Venezuelan men to El Salvador’s Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo, known as CECOT. CBS’s transcript says 252 men were sent there between March and April 2025. The report was scheduled for U.S. broadcast on Dec. 21, 2025, but CBS pulled it from that night’s lineup roughly two to three hours before airtime, saying it needed additional reporting. A cut later appeared on Canada’s Global TV streaming platform and circulated online. CBS ultimately aired the report in the United States on Jan. 18, 2026.
That sequence matters: the report is not still unaired in the United States. Calling the initial delay “censorship” expresses a judgment about the decision; the public record establishes the postponement and a dispute over its rationale, not Bari Weiss’s private intent.
Why did CBS postpone the broadcast?
CBS editor-in-chief Bari Weiss said the report needed more context and an on-camera response from key Trump administration officials. The Associated Press reported her explanation: “To run a story on this subject two months later, we need to do more.” Weiss also said she wanted the principals “on the record and on camera.”

Alfonsi disputed the decision publicly. She said the story had cleared the network’s legal and standards checks and that officials had been asked to comment; she characterized the delay as political. That is Alfonsi’s assessment, not independently established evidence of Weiss’s motive. The available accounts document competing explanations, not a proven hidden reason for the postponement.
How did an earlier cut circulate online?
On Dec. 22–23, 2025, a cut that included Inside CECOT appeared through Global TV’s Canadian streaming platform and then spread online. The Guardian reported viewing a version nearly 14 minutes long. Its circulation prompted descriptions such as “internet contraband,” but that phrase captures the charged circumstances of the leak rather than establishing that the report remained prohibited or unavailable. CBS later broadcast its report in the United States.

What did the report say about the men held at CECOT?
The CBS report included interviews with former detainees Luis Muñoz Pinto and Wuilliam Lozada Sánchez. They described physical and sexual abuse, deprivation, forced stress positions, and punishment in a room they called “the Island.” These are the men’s allegations as presented in the report, not findings by a court. CBS said the Department of Homeland Security declined an interview and that El Salvador’s government did not respond to its request for comment.
The segment also discussed what available U.S. records did—and did not—show about the men’s criminal histories. CBS said its review of available ICE data found that 33 of the 252 men had U.S. convictions, including eight for violent or potentially violent crimes. It reported that 70 more had pending charges, while noting DHS did not provide a complete list of names or criminal histories. Human Rights Watch deputy director Juan Pappier said ICE data indicated only 3% had been sentenced for a violent or potentially violent crime. These figures describe the records and analyses cited by CBS; they do not establish the criminal or gang status of every individual.

Separately, CBS summarized Human Rights Watch’s analysis as finding that nearly half the men had no criminal history, based on the criminal-record checks covered by that report. That figure should not be treated as a complete, independently verified account of every person’s record: CBS said the full underlying list was not provided by DHS.
What did human-rights investigators and Berkeley researchers contribute?
In a report published Nov. 12, 2025, Human Rights Watch and Cristosal said they interviewed 40 people formerly held at CECOT and 150 other people with credible knowledge, including relatives and lawyers. They also reviewed documents, photographs, criminal and judicial records, and consulted forensic experts. The organizations concluded that the men experienced arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance under international human-rights law, inhumane prison conditions, beatings and other ill-treatment, and some sexual violence. These are the organizations’ findings, not a court judgment.

UC Berkeley’s Human Rights Center Investigations Lab independently checked aspects of testimony using open-source material, including public videos, satellite imagery, prison architecture, and visible details. Berkeley says the student researchers did not access detainees’ personal testimonies collected by Human Rights Watch. Their work corroborated details such as the prison layout and light and water conditions, and material visible in videos. The reporting therefore combined firsthand accounts with documentary and visual verification, while keeping the distinct methods and limits of those sources in view.

The Jan. 18, 2026 U.S. broadcast was reported by The Washington Post to be largely unchanged from the earlier version. CBS added an introduction noting that officials had declined interview requests and a closing segment with a written DHS response, an update about a records request, and a federal-court ruling. Alfonsi said on air: “Since November, 60 Minutes has made several attempts to interview key Trump administration officials on camera about our story. They declined our requests.”

The broadcast resolved one question—whether CBS would air the segment—without resolving the public dispute about why its first scheduled airing was postponed. Nor does the later broadcast validate every allegation in the piece as a judicial finding; it presents the testimony and reporting, alongside the network’s account of its efforts to obtain official responses.
Why the distinction between a leak and a broadcast matters
The story’s online circulation and its eventual broadcast are separate events. The earlier cut spread after appearing on a Canadian platform, while CBS’s U.S. broadcast came weeks later. Describing the episode only as a leak misses the eventual airing; describing it as proven censorship overstates what the public evidence establishes. The clearest account is chronological: CBS delayed a planned report amid an editorial dispute, a version surfaced online, and the network later aired the story with limited additions.
