Recommended Free Tools
There is no Streamlabs Desktop preset that guarantees a stable 24/7 YouTube stream. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and encoder your computer can sustain; set a bitrate your connection can carry with at least 20% upload headroom; and use YouTube-compatible ingest settings. Test the complete setup before going live, monitor YouTube Live Control Room, and record locally if you need to keep the full broadcast.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the connection
Start with a quality level your computer and network can sustain continuously, rather than selecting the highest available setting. YouTube’s guidance is to choose a quality that produces a reliable stream for your internet connection. Its bitrate figures are ingest recommendations, not guarantees that your particular computer or connection will maintain a stream indefinitely. YouTube recommends testing your upload bitrate and checking the current table for the codec Streamlabs actually sends: YouTube encoder settings and bitrates.
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
The 720p60 recommendation is higher than 1080p30 in YouTube’s H.264 table, so do not assume that lowering resolution always lowers the recommended bitrate. The table also has separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265. If Streamlabs is set to one of those codecs, use its corresponding YouTube row rather than applying the H.264 figures.
Leave upload capacity in reserve
YouTube recommends upload capacity at least 20% above the total outgoing stream bitrate. Include audio and every output you send, including a backup stream if you use one. For example, a 6 Mbps video bitrate needs more than 6 Mbps of sustained upload capacity; apply YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation to the total outgoing bitrate, not just the video number. Available bandwidth can vary, particularly on a shared connection, so avoid choosing settings that sit at the edge of a speed-test result. See YouTube’s guidance for network and encoder setup.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set YouTube-compatible encoder and audio options
Match Streamlabs’ output to YouTube’s current ingest recommendations. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), AAC or MP3 audio, and RTMP or RTMPS transport; it recommends RTMPS. H.264, H.265, and AV1 are listed video codecs, subject to the applicable ingest guidance and encoder support. YouTube’s advanced guidance gives 128 kbps for stereo audio and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate. Check the current YouTube encoder settings page against the actual output from your Streamlabs installation.
Choose an encoder your computer can sustain
Streamlabs notes that x264 encoding uses the CPU, while hardware encoders such as NVENC use the GPU. Neither choice is automatically more reliable for every computer. Choose the available encoder and quality settings that leave sufficient headroom on your actual system. A hardware encoder does not fix a weak upload connection, and a stable network does not prevent a computer from becoming overloaded. Streamlabs’ Desktop setup guide notes that settings vary by platform and recommends testing the chosen setup.

Enable Dynamic Bitrate as a network fallback
In Streamlabs Desktop, open Settings > Advanced and enable “Dynamically change bitrate when dropping frames while streaming.” Set a sensible target bitrate first. Streamlabs says Dynamic Bitrate lowers bitrate when network conditions cause dropped frames, then gradually returns toward the target as conditions improve. It can help when network conditions fluctuate, but it cannot create upload capacity or protect against a computer crash, power failure, encoder fault, or YouTube-side outage. Details are in Streamlabs’ Dynamic Bitrate guidance.
Test the full setup before a long broadcast
Set up the encoder in advance and test with the same kind of audio and movement as the intended program. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview and monitoring stream health and error messages during the event. A static test image alone may not reveal how the system behaves with the real program.

- Start a private or unlisted test broadcast using the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and audio.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and the watch page for picture, sound, and motion problems. Review stream health and any messages in Live Control Room.
- Check sustained upload use against available capacity, including other users or devices sharing the connection. Leave the recommended headroom rather than treating a brief speed-test peak as a dependable rate.
- Watch CPU or GPU load while the representative program is running. If the system is under strain, reduce the output demands or choose an encoder configuration it can sustain, then test again.
- If making a local recording, confirm that the file appears, grows during the test, and can be opened. For a long run, check free storage and verify the recording periodically.
- Decide how you will restore the broadcast after an interruption. Reconnect behavior depends on the actual installation and should be tested rather than assumed.
YouTube’s guidance on encoder setup and stream health explains the preview and monitoring checks.
Plan a local archive for a stream longer than 12 hours
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends a local archive as a backup. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If retaining the entire 24/7 run matters, record locally and make sure the drive has enough free space for the bitrate and retention period; monitor the file and confirm its integrity during operation. See YouTube’s guidance on live stream archives and DVR on live streams.

Troubleshoot common instability
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or unstable stream health | Upload capacity, connection variation, or competing network use | Compare total outgoing bitrate with sustained available upload capacity; restore headroom, reduce bitrate if needed, and consider Dynamic Bitrate as a fallback. |
| Encoding overload or choppy output | CPU or GPU load and encoder settings | Check system load during representative motion. Reduce output demands or choose an encoder configuration the computer can sustain, then test again. |
| Preview or audio does not match the intended program | Encoder output, audio configuration, or program sources | Verify the Live Control Room preview, output codec and audio, and the actual program before beginning the long broadcast. |
| Broadcast stops unexpectedly | Network, computer, power, encoder, or YouTube-side interruption | Check Live Control Room messages and the system and connection; follow the recovery plan you tested for that installation. Dynamic Bitrate only addresses certain network-related dropped-frame conditions. |
| The full broadcast is missing from YouTube | Run exceeded 12 hours | Do not rely on YouTube’s archive for a run over 12 hours; use and verify a local recording if the full run matters. |
